AIBU to wonder what would happen if all the lockdowns ended

and instead everyone was very clean and careful and social distanced and wore masks.

If everyone just raised their game and did their best. I don't mean the very elderly, or shielded people.

Would it just be carnage?

Well if everyone "raises there game and did their best" we probably wouldn't need so many restrictions. But lots of people are selfish or lazy so here we are.

Tadpolesandfroglets · 01/10/2020 22:53

This is basically what Sweden did, they seem to be doing quite well now after initial surge, there’s been no second spike.

TheNanny23 · 01/10/2020 22:54

Well hardly anyone seems to be actually adhering to additional lockdown anyway- it’s a bit of a joke.

EasterIssland · 01/10/2020 22:56

Problem is that people not even when there is laws and bans follow the rules ... so if everything was lifted ... numbers would rise and doctors would need to choose who to attend and who not in the worse case scenario. (Not that they’ve not done it until now stopping some treatments or delaying some of the appointments which has increased other illness’ numbers )

Agreed

Initial lockdown helped at a point the NHS was close to breaking. After that, I think, if the kids had gone back to school after Spring Bank holiday and everything else had gone back to normal pretty quickly we would have had a small surge but, being summer, it would have been small and the hospitals would have coped. Then we would be in a good position to cope now with some small increase due to the season.

But people aren't raising their game are they? Even in lock down areas people aren't keeping to the rules. In principle I agree, if we all wore masks, socially distanced etc things would be over much quicker. But it appears we are a very selfish nation.

GoldfishParade · 01/10/2020 23:03

We live in a culture of permanent outraged entitlement and individualistic instant gratification.

We are not Sweden.

ineedaholidaynow · 01/10/2020 23:04

Just look at the thread where people are saying they refuse to give their correct details for test and trace and have said they don't see why they should have social responsibility. Unfortunately many people in this country are selfish idiots, Swedish people seem to have a much better sense of social responsibility and don't need laws to tell them what they should be doing.

Votesforpedro · 01/10/2020 23:09

Normal NHS services would not be able to resume, many people would die unnecessarily and the long term health of othwerwise younger and fit could be put in jeopardy. The economy would suffer dire consequences.

Votesforpedro · 01/10/2020 23:17

The health of Swedens overall population is much better than in the UK and geographically differs in terms of how densely populated areas are. I would also be interested in knowing Swedens BAME population too, considering the known risk factor.

x2boys · 02/10/2020 07:32

Well to many people refuse to even wear masks , so I suspect the virus would be out of control before long .

CakeRequired · 02/10/2020 07:37

We, as a country, still need told how long to wash our hands for to get rid of a virus, have to be told to use soap, and also think that the best thing to do in a pandemic is stock pile toilet paper.

We are literally too stupid to be trusted on our own.

Arcadia · 02/10/2020 07:44

I don't get this characterisation of 'us' as lazy, selfish and stupid. It's just another way of throwing blame around. When we're frustrated and anxious. I'm sure most countries have a mix of people who behave in different ways, it's just human nature. I don't think self loathing and loathing of each other really helps. For example Germany is seen as very rule-abiding but they've had huge anti-restriction demos in Berlin. I just don't think it's helpful to generalise about people's behaviour.

WhoWants2Know · 02/10/2020 07:48

Yesterday Sweden reported the highest number of positive cases since June, so it may be a bit soon to say that they have the virus beat.

vanillandhoney · 02/10/2020 07:49

Half of MN would implode as they all seem to want another full lockdown Wink

SarahBellam · 02/10/2020 07:53

Too many people in the UK are thick pricks. That’s why.

Arcadia · 02/10/2020 07:55

@WhoWants2Know I can't see that

That's why - what?
x2boys · 02/10/2020 08:03

It's hard not to generalise I live in Bolton untill last week we had the highest rates of infection in the UK ,it's gone down a bit now ,and from what I saw it was because people where not following the rules, large gatherings on the park behind my house, people not wearing masks properly or at all, people not social distancing in supermarkets etc ,whilst I'm sure the majority do follow the rules there is a large very vocal minority in my town at least that don't/didn't

Arcadia · 02/10/2020 08:27

@x2boys I have seen other posters say that about Bolton. Perhaps I'm lucky where I live, a University city in the South East - we've had problems with students (parties) but otherwise I haven't seen or heard of much rule breaking at all, even the people I know who are a bit anti all the rules are going along with wearing masks etc.
