To think not everyone can be expected to scan QR codes?

I’ve not wanted a smart phone for a long time, I wasted too much time on one so when it broke I got a basic phone.

Today I went out with the kids and stopped for a burger. First time in many months so i’ll admit I went in not knowing the new rules, it was an impulse treat. We sat down then were approached and asked to scan the QR code. I said I didn’t have a camera phone capable but I was happy to write my details on paper or any other way to record for track and trace.

After some back and forth and indecisiveness we were asked to leave. I was told I could get a takeaway but didn’t really fancy happy meals and rain! They were pretty aggressive in their tone about how I had to for various reasons, and ignored my polite replies I was fine with track and trace but couldn’t scan the code as my phone didn’t have the function.

It’s seemed ridiculous I could stand in a squashy area indoors waiting for food, but not sit indoors in a wide spacious empty bit too frankly- but whatever the rules surely they need accommodate people without smart phones? I can go elsewhere but they are effectively barring those on the lowest incomes. The rules are starting to feel bonkers, I can stand in a long queue indoors fine for example but no smartphone no meal?

Obviously aggression towards customers shouldn't be tolerated. But sometimes I do wonder about peoples perception of "aggression"

[....]The staff member was polite but firm and said that they wouldn't serve them

But this is a very different situation to the one described above. The restaurant was within rights to require masks and the staff were obviously trained to manage difficult customers.

Illegally failiing to provide an alternative to QR scanning and then getting antsi with people who want to provide details is lousy customer service and bad business. I don't see why customers should shut up and put up with bad service -it just encourages it.

Venues are definitely insisting on a QR scan before entry. Sunday lunch in a very popular place in South Manchester. No ap and scan no entry. It's not illegal at all anymore than having a dress code or going cashless. For sure it might exclude people who chose not to use it- but I can see why venues are going this route. Police are closing venues breaching rules and an outbreak linked to one hospitality venue would destroy it.

It's hard to get a booking Thursday to Sunday anywhere around here apart from chain places so I guess places that insist on QR codes are making a commercial decision. I'd rather rely on an ap than on scribbled bits of paper plus its easier and quicker to capture the info

The legislation requires the option of non QR recording of details precisely because a high proportion of the population don't have access to the system.

And by all means complain to the manager or owner about the lack of alternative to the qr code. But what I was saying is don't rant at the minimum wage staff who have no influence on the matter.

I'm back on anxiety meds because of the situation at work. I have to enforce rules that I have no control over and many of the customers have been aggressive. I'm probably a bit more short than I normally would be but I also need people to listen to me and they often won't unless you're very firm.

our local costa told me that i needed to scan the qr code or I could not sit in but my phone is too old to do that so i asked if they had an alternative way of recording ( i have used paper and pen at starbucks on another occasion ) and they said they dint have one and that I was ok to sit in any way Confused
Also at a restaurant with a friend and she ordered via the pub's app only to be told three out of the four items were not available so we chose alternatives but that then meant we overpaid as alternatives were cheaper and they couldn't work out what to do- gave it back in cash and spent much more time close to us than if we had ordered via the waitress
no p;ocess works perfectly.

It’s not just for track and trace, some places require you to scan a QR code to access their menu as well.
