Laundry detergent in the fabric softener slot

MrsWolf2 · 01/10/2020 19:36

DH put the wash on and made a mistake with the detergent so it ended up where it should be as well as half filling the fabric softener slot. He then realised his mistake and topped up the slot with actual fabric conditioner.

I didn’t realise this happened til after I’d hung it up. Does it matter? CBA to do it again really but is the washing going to end up all stiff or something else bad? Will it just be extra clean and have a bit of a strong smell?

AIBU to just leave it?

Do an extra rinse or two at the end of the wash?

MrsWolf2 · 01/10/2020 19:52

It’s already hung up though so I’d need to put it back in the machine and then take it out and hang it up again, and really I want somebody to tell me that I don’t need to bother doing that. Or a good reason to do it. But ideally the first one please Smile

I'd just leave it then tbh.

You don't need to bother 😂 HTH
On my old machine I just chucked it in where ever , all was well

pastabest · 01/10/2020 19:55

It will make no difference whatsoever other than it might smell a bit stronger if he put more in. It all goes down the same hole.

I don't even use fabric softener.

I think its more that the detergent won't have been rinsed out properly and the clothes would have been washed with just water. As a one off it will be fine and I wouldn't rewash it

Felifox · 01/10/2020 20:02

Depends what you use to wash with. I use very little liquid wash and usually ecover. But I would rinse it to be on the safe side

MrsWolf2 · 01/10/2020 20:05

Well DH doesn’t give even a little bit of a fuck to be honest, It’s just me wondering if it might somehow be bad for the clothes and/or our skin as I don’t know what stage the machine adds what’s in the softener slot and if it gets rinsed after.

Thanks to everyone who has agreed I can just leave it. I will be doing that 😀

It uses washing powder or liquid to wash the clothes. Then it rinses them.
Then it does a final rinse with the conditioner, but kind of leaving it in.

So like shampoo and conditioner, except the conditioner goes on mixed with water and doesn’t get washed out.

The problem you have is that your clothes are now all covered in washing powder and not rinsed off. You might get a bit itchy from it. Or you might not. Won’t harm you.

dementedpixie · 01/10/2020 20:11

Softener normally goes into the final rinse

Movinghouseatlast · 01/10/2020 20:15

I've done this recently with no discernable difference

BertieBotts · 01/10/2020 20:17

I would just leave it unless you have someone in your house who is prone to rashes caused by harsher washing chemicals, because I think being in that drawer means it doesn't get totally rinsed off.

But I spill bits of washing powder in mine all the time and nothing ever happens.

BertieBotts · 01/10/2020 20:18

And if that does apply I would just take all of that person's clothes from that wash, chuck them in the machine on a rinse cycle or quick wash without any detergent and hang them up again.

ApolloandDaphne · 01/10/2020 20:57

I've done that by mistake before and didn't try to rectify it. The clothes were fine.
