That getting a [preplanned] puppy in lockdown is not selfish?

I met friend X for a coffee, who asked me how our mutual friend Y is and how they found lockdown. I said they were fine and mentioned in passing that friend Y’s children had been entertained in lockdown with their new puppy. Friend X was horrified friend Y got a puppy in lockdown, saying it was selfish and illegal. I disagreed and said it wasn’t selfish, puppies have to leave the mum and siblings before a certain age and that life had to go on in some areas- Particularly when there would be a surplus of animals, damaging the animals health, or worse, never picked up at all.

Puppy was picked up without contact, no one interacted physically. This was also a pre-planned puppy, not a boredom, “lets get a puppy” in lockdown decision.

AIBU to say that picking up animals in lockdown would not have been selfish? Especially when a breeder keeping puppies longer than expected can cause havoc if they are not picked up when expected. If contactless food deliveries were allowed, surely picking up a puppy would also be fine if all parties had made sure to avoid contact?

I’m aware this was some time ago, was simply wondering on opinions as I know quite a few people who picked up new pets as normal.

We had our puppy recently, not in full lockdown, and not breaking any rules to view/collect. It had been a plan to get a puppy for quite some time, and the right one finally appeared so we went for it. My lifestyle is the same, lockdown or not though. I worry for those who have got puppies to spend months at home with them and suddenly vanish back to work.

X just jumped to the wrong conclusion, that's all.

I've definitely read about people who have got a puppy during lockdown when they were working from home, and hadn't thought through what would happen when they went back to work, so there is a genuine concern. I guess saying that Y's children were kept entertained by the new puppy does make it sound like she got it because of lockdown, and so might be one of those people. But she's not, so no problem.
