yesterday, a child in reception had made it to the school gate just as his mum was coming in. He had been let out before they had seen her basically, which IMHO isn't good enough. Apparently school very apologetic, said they'd thought they had seen her with the waiting mums. Well today my friends dd stopped another child from reception from escaping, exactly the same had happened again. Now i am always on time, but I would now be quite worried about being late if anything did happen.

Oh this is awful. I was paranoid about this happening to me (so it never did). In Reception the child is usually handed over to the parent directly, I would write and ask the head if that could be done. I really can't believe it happened twice! I

YANBU - school should be matching up parents and children at this age.

mustsleep · 10/10/2007 18:02

unfortunately it happens when ds was in nursery and they had the xmas play we had to walk back to nursery from the hall which is accross the playground and then wait outside for our kids who were getting changed - you were not allowed to go in and help them

saw this little boy from ds's class just wondering around in the playground i asked him if hi mummy had collected him he said he was looking for her i said he could stand with me and then i saw his mum comong back for the hall and she was obv really upset that they had not noticed he had got outside

the school is a v busy main road ffs

Last week DS was supposed to be doing an after school club - but his teacher forgot and sent him off with another parent at the end of the normal school day. I was in the neighbouring juniors playground picking up DD1 when saw DS walking off with someone I had not given the school permission to release him to. Not impressed!

YANBU. Saw a little girl running out of the nursery door at ds's school last week - teacher was stood in the doorway and didn't even notice! Luckily her mother was just crossing the playground on her way back from dropping other son off at the other entrance. But I was horrified.

our school isn't near a busy road as such, but road still a big problem, due to it being in terraced street, no off road parking, double parking etc. I hate to think what would have happened if child hadn't been stopped by friends dd, we know the child and were only saying yesterday he would be the type to run off given the chance.

parents and children supposed to be matched, so how it has happened twice in two days.

YANBU - it must be difficult though for teachers to watch them all I suppose in a big school.

Our children were matched up to us at the door up until the age of 7, they never made a mistake IIRC.

SaintGeorge · 10/10/2007 18:09

Our Reception and Yr1 children are kept in the classrooms until collected by a known adult.

They only start coming out to waiting parents from Yr2 onwards. Much safer.

constancereader · 10/10/2007 18:30

But the teacher should be in speaking distance of the parent and ONLY THEN hand them over. As a supply teacher I have had irritated comments from parents because I wouldn't respond to random signs from a distance, but I had to put the safety of the children first.

mustsleep · 10/10/2007 19:10

it's a lot better now that ds is in yr 1 like you say they will not let them go unless you are right in front of them - and unless they know your face or you ask for them by name

i think that the parent that took mamalocco's child was irresponsible too - i wouldnlt be happy with someone picking my child up unless it had been agreed

our school hand chilcren over until year 2. they're not allowed out of the classroom unless the teacher can see the parent. However we had an incident at the other end of the scale - at the beginning of term parents were allowed into the classroom to help with the early morning routine, eg a task set for the children before they went and sat on the carpet. This arrangement was only to be in place until half term and was to help the reception children settle in. However one morning a child escaped out of the door and made it all the way down to the main gate where he was spotted by a parent and brought back. This has never happened in the 7 years this school has been there, it could have been catastrophic but thankfully it wasn't, and the arrangement of letting parents in was stopped with immediate effect and we were all called into the hall the next day where the head explained what had happened and that the arrangement was to be changed as the safety of the children is paramount.

I personally find it amazing that the teacher is able to match up all the children with their parents at the end of the day, have just spent the morning helping out in Ds' reception class, and how she keeps track of 30 children and what they are doing when I shall never know.
