Wondering how to measure weight properly.

Posting here for traffic. Am I doing it right? I'm measuring around just above my belly button.

I've measured myself at a 48 inch waist. Not sure this can be right.

I am overweight but don't consider myself massive - size 18 but fit into some 16's. I don't need lectures on needing to lose weight. I know I do.

But looking online a 48 inch would be a size 26-28 (U.K.) from one website.

I fit comfortably into an 18 so what the hell is going on? 😬😬😬 the sizes above would be massive in me. Recently tried on a size 20 jacket and it was big! So how can I possible be a 26-28.

Posting as I am confused.

I am quite tall if that makes a difference!

How are your other measurements, hips and bust?

Do they fit the sizing? Maybe you just don’t have much of a waist. Or could you have been using the wrong end of the tape measure?

Waist not weight **

Are you sure you are measuring correctly - waist measurement needs to be quite high up at the narrowest part of your waist (not around your hips/top of bum) and the tape measure should be pulled quite snugly around (not so tight you can't breath but not baggy or loose either).

Otherwise it may just be the case that your body shape is a bit unconventional for your overall size - clothes sizes really aren't a good guide to anything, vanity sizing and general lack of any regulation on what a size 18 really means just make it a bit meaningless really. Personally I am a pear shape and take a much bigger size in trousers than tops unless I go for elasticated waists or floaty/non fitted skirts, have a narrow-ish waist but a big bum Blush, you may be the opposite?

Waist to height ratio and BMI are still the best general indicators of health so if you are mainly concerned there then I wouldn't take what clothes size you fit into as anything other than a motivational factor!

Assuming you're not doing something silly like reading numbers upside down, are you very apple shaped, but with slimmer hips and bust?

Because that's the only way you could possibly be 48 inches round your middle and otherwise a 16-18.

If you wear trousers or a skirt, are you wearing them low around your hips or around your belly button or in the general vicinity?

What sort of tops are you wearing? Fairly fitted or floaty? Did the massive jacket do up or did it need to be open?

48 the other other way up is 84!

84 cm is 33.5 inches, which is far more in line with what a woman's waist should be.

Thanks all. I guess I am a weird shape. I have fairly small boobs and not so big bottom (not small but not particularly large either). I seem to carry it all around the middle. I will try measuring again.

I wear high waist jeans just because anything lower is uncomfortable. I wear tops loose, not tight. Often have to buy tall tops and blouses for them to be long enough (I have a long torso compared to my legs I think). I cannot wear clothes that are too tight or don't do up definitely comfortably fitting into a size 18. Bizarre!

Honestly op measure again as 48 inches really does sound huge for a waist. Your waist is round just below the rib cage, at your narrowest point
