Someone please help- in agony with dental pain

At the beginning of lockdown I managed to get one of the very last appointments at my dentist before everything got shut down as I was having recurring dental pain. They identified that one of my teeth needs to come out but as they don’t do extractions they referred me elsewhere, I was told there’d be a wait so in the meantime I just had to keep popping paracetamol like tic tacs.
I never heard from the other clinic and the pain eventually went away by itself so I just left it.

My dentist appointment in August was cancelled, rescheduled for next week. Last week that was cancelled too.

However in the last few days the pain has come back with a vengeance. Paracetamol isn’t touching it- the longest it has worked for is half an hour. I called my dentist but they’re following the same policy as GP surgeries so I’ve got a telephone consultation what fucking good is that?? on Monday. They gave me the number of the clinic they’d referred me to so I called them (turns out they had my number wrong) and the earliest appointment I can get there is the 15th Oct.

I’m still breastfeeding DS once or twice a day so can’t take anything stronger than paracetamol, which doesn’t seem to be working. The pain keeps coming and going every couple of minutes and when it comes back it really is agony, to the point where I can barely keep still or think straight. I’ve tried swishing salt water which works while I’m doing it and for a minute or two after but that’s it.

What the hell do I do??

A&E booking in nurse said they probably won’t be able to help- “it’s dentists that do dental treatment.”

Great. Thanks.

A&E won't be able to do anything op. Wait for the triage call. I worked in dentistry and OOH dentists for years.

Ouch. I needed a root canal at the end of lockdown. I found sipping water helped and also double-dosing with ibuprofen and paracetamol before bed. A private dentist did a root canal which was worth every penny.

Ohlordthepain · 30/09/2020 15:42

I sympathise massively. I needed a filling earlier this year but couldn't due to dentists closing so developed pulpitis and needed a root canal.

I screamed and cried down the phone at 111 and the emergency central hub but the only thing they were able to tell me was "you need to see a dentist" .

The pain became unbearable and the last 24 hours were utter hell. Never felt anything like it. Painkillers didn't touch it, couldn't eat or sleep or talk, just had to sit awake with ice water in my mouth and spit it out when it became too warm. The pain then suddenly stopped which was the nerve dying.

My advice is forget 111and just call every single private dentist in the area and see if anyone will get you an appointment and also if they can refer you to the NHS emergency dentist. That's how I finally got seen.

Private dentists are operating in our area - I literally had a checkup and clean the other day. It's a BUPA private dentist (I'm have dental insurance) but I am sure you can get someone to see you even if on compassionate grounds! Check them out local to you - not cheap but worth it.

My mum had to find a private dentist to treat hers it was more expensive but they see her quickly
Maybe an option ?

Hold really hot water with salt in it in your mouth in the area it hurts. As hot as you can manage. That took my pain away when I had an abscess. Absolute murder. Keep phoning every half hour. Really do their tits in and hopefully they get you in. Would the doctor leave you a prescription for some strong codine if you called them? x

Lovely, lovely, lovely A&E Dr prescribed oramorph (wasn’t expecting that!) which has done the job. During triage call the dentist said it’s likely to be the tooth due to come out but they’re going to book me in to take a look at the others just in case. Not sure yet when that will be though. In the meantime if I need more pain relief got to contact the GP.

Glad they’ve given you something to help for now. Did the doc recommend taking Paracetamol and Ibuprofen at the same time as the Oramorph? Paracetamol helps opiates work and the Ibuprofen should reduce the pain a bit too by reducing the inflammation. As a PP said, brush really well in that area a few times a day too, it should help.
