No boiler for at least a week?

AIBU to be a little concerned as to how we will manage this, without any hot water?

My trusted plumber isn't able to get to it until then. I have had so many bad experiences I don't trust anyone else, so I'm a bit stuck. Previously we have managed situations like this by having showers at gym, work etc but in these Covid times that's no longer possible.

Heating I'm not too bothered about but the lack of hot water is rather different.

WWYD if you were me? Any advice?

OP, have you looked up other gyms in your areas in case they have taster sessions?

dementedpixie · 30/09/2020 16:33

My dh is with David Lloyd and their showers are open. My local council ones are shut

Can you book into a cheap travelodge or holiday inn for a night?

We have had this three times in three separate houses and it's a pig but it is doable. Boiling water in a kettle and washing. Is your workplace open to have a shower?

BeyondsConstantBangingHeadache · 30/09/2020 16:41

Just a thought - I'm without hot water/heating here too, and been weighing this up myself - how about a cheap hotel? Like a travelodge?
(luckily we do have an electric shower, but I struggle to use it cause of my mobility)

bucket of water, 2 kettles of boiling and topped up with cold and a small plastic jug did DH and I well when our boiler went. I used to stand in the bath and pour over myself. I have very thick hair as well and it still worked ok!

ExclamationPerfume · 30/09/2020 16:44

We went for almost a year without hot water/heating. Just boil lots of kettles of water.

We went for almost a year without hot water/heating

Why?

ExclamationPerfume · 30/09/2020 16:48

@Ginfordinner because we couldn't afford to have the boiler replaced.

Both my gym and DC gym showers are shut, they're the nearest ones locally. We do have a David Lloyd but they rarely have any kind of free trial or anything. Probably cheaper to book into the Travelodge (we do have one of those nearby, but it's pretty grotty). However it is an option if all else fails.

My workplace is on restricted access currently and in any event all the showers there are closed off too!

I just have to tell myself it's not forever. I managed for 2 weeks last time, but that was with the gym open of course.

I didn't have any hot water for 19 days last year I cried on the phone to the plumber it was so ridiculous. You will be fine for only a week 😂

MayIJustAsk · 01/10/2020 22:01

I rent and thats how long they took to sort a broken boiler and I didn't get any discount in my rent. I must have stank, still had to go work and kids school. Had to boil kettle to wash up. Only good thing was they decided the bathroom needed a refurb and fitted an electric shower! Think it's so I didn't complain.

ifancyagreencard · 01/10/2020 22:07

Grab a large stock pot from Amazon so you can at least have a volume of hot water to hand. A decent pot will hold at leat 8 kettles' worth and will go a surprisingly long way when cool water is added to get a safe temp. Good luck!

Howlooseisyourgoose · 02/10/2020 02:05

A stockpot for hot water for one week? Waste of money. It’s not really as easy as grabbing, by the time the stockpot arrives (not everything is available next day), the plumber may have been and fixed it!

grenlei · 02/10/2020 19:55

Have come up with a plan - found a gym with showers about 20 mins away that I can get a months membership for £15 (no joining fee). Thinking it's probably worth it as if for any reason my plumber can't repair it next week and it takes a few days or so longer at least I will be still able to get a shower. Am going tomorrow morning...can't wait!
