I would say either five years older or younger is a similar age.

Yep, came here to say the same thing Grin
Most of my friends seem to be 10 years younger though, not sure what that says 🤣

5 that is

IncandescentSilver · 28/09/2020 20:49

I'm going for a wider range and saying 13 years, as cultural and media references tend to span that range (e.g. you will often still know most of the same songs, films, etc) and also by the criteria that you aren't old enough to be their child!

Ohtherewearethen · 28/09/2020 20:50

I was going to say five. I do think age matters though. For example, there's a big difference between 16 and 21 and 21 and 26. By the time you're over 30 (the age at which I probably felt 'proper' grown up) I don't think it matters as much.

I'd have said 8 or 9!

Aragog · 28/09/2020 20:54

I think it depends on your stage of life, your actual age. Gaps seem much more the younger you are.

I'm mid to late 40s but would say 'similar age' would be about 5 years either side, maybe more.

But if your are early 20s, then that kind f age gap would seem more noticeable.

ShinyMe · 28/09/2020 20:54

I think the older you get, the less it matters and the wider the span that makes a difference. There's a massive difference between a 3 year old and a 5 year old, but hardly any between a 25 year old and a 27 year old. And as a 48 year old, I don't feel particularly different to someone of 40 or 55.

CoRhona · 28/09/2020 20:56

Depends on the people. One of my very best friends is nearly ten years younger than me but you wouldn't think it to hear us talk, we have the same world view.

BuffaloCauliflower · 28/09/2020 20:56

Hmm. I’m nearly 33, I’d probably say 4-5 years either side

Frappuccinofan · 28/09/2020 20:57

I’m 23 and I would say 1-2 years below/above.

I would say I relate most to fellow university graduates? Because people still at uni or 21 seem young in comparison to me as my life has mellowed out. Then again 25 sounds old almost - as in I feel pressurised to have achieved certain goals and settle down by then

Plussizejumpsuit · 28/09/2020 20:59

I'd say 3 to 5 for most adults. But agree with pp's about age making a difference or stage of life perhaps. So just leaving uni at 21 can feel very different to 26. I also think it does depend why you're grouping into a similar age.

What shinyme said

LolaSmiles · 28/09/2020 21:07

I think it depends when you're born and whether you share similar cultural references.

Someone could be closer in age, but be miles away in terms of life experiences and culture.
For example we were talking about children's TV at work and someone only a couple of years younger than me didn't understand many of the shows we were talking about and yet those of us who got the references was probably within 6-8 years of each other. The younger colleague was closer in age to me than I was to other colleagues but we were clearly different sides of an era.

Livpool · 28/09/2020 21:27

I am 49 and one of my friends is 31 - we met through work and have become quite close.

Although it is a pretty big age gap she had her DC a couple of years after me. So I think we are in the same stage of life if that makes sense

Sarahandduck18 · 28/09/2020 21:47

2 years

bonzo77 · 28/09/2020 22:18

10-15% of one’s age either way. Whatever your age. So if you’re 10 then someone aged around 9-11. I’m 43 so I’d say 38-48. My mum is 67, so I’d say 58-75ish.
