To think that if you have a conservatory, it will be too cold to use for about half the year?

I mean, you won’t be able to sit in it for any length of time unless you spend a fortune heating it. I’m not sure what people use them for.

You can get them with insulated roofs now and they are a lot warner. My parents use theirs all year round its basically their living room.

LockdownLump · 28/09/2020 18:47

We don't have one, but Pils do. They spend loads of time in there. Use is when we have dinner together and also has a sofa in there which is well used.

They have just had a roof put on it and it looks fab. It's just like an extension tbh.

Onanonanon · 28/09/2020 18:47

You're exactly right. Love ours and use it as dining room/ extra sitting room for 6 months of the year but can't go in it for the other 6 months. It came with the house and we can't afford to install heating/insulation/knock it down or do anything else useful with it. Wouldn't choose to have one again.

sapnupuas · 28/09/2020 18:48

We hardly use ours. It's either too hot or too cold. And it's full of spiders.

Yep! And too hot for the other six months...

flumposie · 28/09/2020 18:56

I love mine. It is the dining room /craft room, a work area. Spent most of lockdown teaching from it. It has a sofa, electric heater. Just have to put the heater on in Winter. I wouldn't cope without it.

Figgygal · 28/09/2020 18:57

We love ours but yes it gets a bit nippy in the day time

Barefootinthecarpark · 28/09/2020 18:58

Ours is south-west facing so it’s pretty good all year round.

toconclude · 28/09/2020 19:00

Depends on the design. Ours is brick wall three sides and halfway up at the front - more of a garden room, and with a properly insulated polycarbonate multi layer roof and a radiator, is fine except when it gets below freezing, and manageable as a dining room even then.

ulanbatorismynextstop · 28/09/2020 19:00

We have one and use it late March to early October. But we use it loads in the summer, it's a lovely space. We have Christmas dinner in there too because it can take a long table. They're lovely spaces even if some months you keep out of them

BogRollBOGOF · 28/09/2020 19:05

I usually use mine March to October. At this time of the year, a half bright day is still warm enough to heat the house through.

In the winter, it is usable around lunchtime on a frosty day. Our garden gets swampy and the kids do spill out into it as a semi-outdoor space to romp in.

Long term we'd turn it into a better moderated, insulated room with underfloor heating, but it is already an asset to the house.

Boulshired · 28/09/2020 19:16

Mine now has a tiled roof, so can be used all year round. I would not install a new conservatory but if you already have one in good condition there are now many ways to make them useable all year round.

RedskyAtnight · 28/09/2020 19:20

Yep, and it's too hot to use for about the other half of the year. I swear there are only about 4-6 weeks when it's actually at a bearable temperature (it came with the house, it's mostly used as a dumping ground storage area.

PaulinePetrovaPosey · 28/09/2020 19:21

Ours is great all year round. But it has good blinds and ventilation in the summer, and insulation in the winter.

I think it's a get what you pay for thing - cheap conservatories will be crap.

Whammyyammy · 28/09/2020 19:23

Conservatories are so 1980s, cold in winter and hot in summer, so unusable most of the year. You can get the roof insulated and covered with pvc panels over replace with extension.

CakeGirl2020 · 28/09/2020 19:24

No mine isn’t cold, it’s got a radiator for winter use! I use it for alone time for an hour or 2 every evening once dc are in bed & I'm waiting for DH to get home

cuppycakey · 28/09/2020 19:27

Mine has a panel heater which heats it really cheaply and it's really cosy. Can be used throughout the year. I am South Coast though so maybe it doesn't get as cold here as some other areas?

Sparklesocks · 28/09/2020 19:27

My mum has one with underfloor heating so it’s nice and warm in that one. But I guess it depends on how/when they were made.

TrickyD · 28/09/2020 19:29

Our is great. Underfloor heating so cosy in winter, southeasterly facing with some shade so not too hot in summer.
Plenty of room for a sofa, two chairs, coffee table, lamp tables and a dining table seating 10 or 12 at a pinch, and room to extend with a garden table if there are more of us. Lots of plants.

Best thing we ever did.

DonttouchthatLarry · 28/09/2020 19:32

We use ours mainly in the colder months - in summer when it's too hot to sit in there we go outside instead but it's usable early morning and late evening.

In winter it's plenty warm enough as the heat from the log burner in the lounge warms it up and there's a radiator in there too. We have our dining table and a sofa in there and DH has been working in there since lockdown - we actually use it a lot, I like to read in there as the light is better.

delilahbucket · 28/09/2020 19:32

My dad has one and they're always using it. It is like an extension with lots of windows. If you have a good quality conservatory then you can use it all year round, but you get what you pay for.

Fyzz · 28/09/2020 19:33

We built a huge conservatory on our house and my only regret is not doing it sooner. I love my garden and the conservatory feels like I'm sitting in the garden . We have a dining table in there and sofas. It's used day and night for about 8 months then I shut it from around the end of October to February. It has heating so we can use it in winter if we have a big family gathering.
In spring its a real pleasure to open it up again.
We do have plenty of other living space in the house though, I can see it would feel a waste if you were short of living space.
I love it.

CherryCocktails · 28/09/2020 19:34

Mine has a radiator in it (came with the house) so it's lovely and cosy in the winter.

I have a tv, sofa and table in there, a downstairs loo and utility area. Plus it's great for drying washing in the winter!

BeardieWeirdie · 28/09/2020 19:34

We’re taking ours down as soon as planning permission comes through for a proper extension. It’s terrible, no insulation so either too hot or too cold to use.
