That's all. What is it good or not for? Thank you

It's eczema related and I had a telephone appointment when I was asked to send photos so she could see it. Having viewed my rubbish photos GP called me back with a list of creams I could buy over the counter.
I don't have much money. I have an NHS card as I have other health issues and I don't have a car at the moment.
E45 isn't cutting it.
I had a tick bite back in May.
I'm very worried.

personally I wouldn't go with anything that a doctor can prescribe. They have so much rubbish in them. SLS, paraffin etc .

Invest in some more organic stuff, like MooGoo or The Green People.

CSIblonde · 28/09/2020 04:14

My boss years back had terrible burns from a barbecue accident. His care team told him to keep massaging the scars with E45 cream twice a day. They did improve hugely.

Toilenstripes · 28/09/2020 04:17

Diprobase is what I use. Expensive but much better than E45.

Monty27 · 28/09/2020 04:24

Thanks for the replies. Omg the itchiness and subsequent scratching is distressing.
I can't afford to treat it over the counter and don't trust it either.

Does the eczema relate to the tick bite? I don't know if that sort may behave differently.

What works for eczema is really personal so prescription or not it nay take some experimenting. I like e45 for dry skin but it doesn't treat itchy eczema outbreaks. I need a steroid cream when that happens, usually OTC hydrocortisone or Eumovate, occasionally something stronger on prescription if they don't work.

May be worth asking again for a prescription, I wonder if they automatically give the OTC suggestions first as for most people you get the same thing cheaper OTC.

Get a huge tub of cheap aqueous cream

Dreamersandwishers · 28/09/2020 07:50

Personally, I don’t like E45 for my eczema but it works for some.

Have a word with your local chemist, they probably have a much cheaper generic brand that does the same.

I like Diprobase and there are some others like it that may be cheaper. Depending on just how ‘angry’ your eczema is, ointment may work better than cream.

Montybojangles · 28/09/2020 07:57

I like the baby product Child’s farm moisturiser. Dead cheap and works for me. I’ve always found E45 totally useless.
I’ve also found using dermol for bathing has helped too.

VictoriaBun · 28/09/2020 07:58

I get eczema , and have been through most of the emollients. E45 didn't do much for me.
I got quite for results from Aveeno and it felt soothing. You can go to your pharmacist and buy Hydrocortisone over the counter , but normally they are very reluctant to let you have it if it's on your face, so if you have it there you could say you have it badly in another place ( that's not terrible advice btw as doctor's tell you to do that as well )

CayrolBaaaskin · 28/09/2020 08:02

I also find the child’s farm moisturiser best (as well as occasional steroids). The one with tea tree and grapefruit. As a pp said though, what works for eczema is a very personal thing.

FitzChivalry · 28/09/2020 08:18

Speak to your pharmacy and see if they have a common ailments scheme or if they can direct you to similar

Aqueous cream shouldn't be used as a moisturiser but can be used as a soap substitute.
Sidge · 28/09/2020 08:34

Our CCG won’t let us prescribe first line emollients any more. Patients have to buy them OTC and we only step up when there is inflammation or infection.

Buying online can be much cheaper than buying from a pharmacy. Amazon sell large pumps of Epaderm and Zerobase for about a tenner.

SFCA · 28/09/2020 08:34

Unfortunately moisturisers are so variable for different people. Our son went through

  • E45
  • Hydromol
  • Diprobase
  • Child’s Farm
  • Aveeno
All with no success, he had a nasty reaction to Aveeno and his skin really flared up. He now uses Oilatum in the bath and AquaMax cream and that really works for him but won’t work for all. DS 2 uses coconut oil and that’s fine for him/
FierceS221 · 28/09/2020 10:05

I have eczema and I am currently having quite a bad outbreak with the change of weather.

particularly the inner parts of my elbows! They are really dry and inflamed Sad

I have E45 and I honestly find it bloody useless! I find it very painful to bend my arms because the skin is do dry and cracked sometimes, E45 will provide some relief for about 10 minutes before it starts itching again!

The one cream that truly works for me is hydrocortisone! it clears my eczema up in a couple of days.

I buy mine from the ASDA pharmacy for £1.99. (Its the bee and wasp sting cream I use lol but it does have 1% hydrocortisone I think)

Only problem is, your not supposed to use it extensively so I'd use it for a couple of days and stop until symptoms start flaring up again.

Hope this helps somewhat Smile

strappedup · 28/09/2020 10:59

It’d cost the NHS a lot more to prescribe it than it would for you to buy it

Newkitchen123 · 28/09/2020 11:05

I have eczema and my doc prescribed nizoral shampoo. The eczema isn't on my scalp but somehow it works

Marisishidinginmyattic · 28/09/2020 11:25

Oilatum was the magic cream for us. E45 did nothing for it.

CoRhona · 28/09/2020 11:32

I use E45 as a normal daily moisturiser which works well, but it's not for eczema or anything like that.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 28/09/2020 11:32

I found 'normal' E45 cream didn't do anything but the eczema relief cream (in the green and white tube) was brilliant. I now use that twice a day and an antihistamine before bed.

longtompot · 28/09/2020 11:44

I've had eczema all my life and the only things that worked to stop the awful itching was a steroid based ointment. I use it sparingly when I have a flare up, and in between times use whatever hand cream I have in the house. E45 didn't really help with the eczema but it can help when washing when things are particularly bad.
Oh, my ed had some CeraVe cream which was really good. You can get it in Boots etc. I tried a bit and found it really helped.

Zilla1 · 28/09/2020 11:48

E45 is mainly a moisturiser. As SFCA says, it can be trial and error to find the best one which I know isn't great if money is tight. Sometimes skin conditions require steroids. Sometimes there are underlying infections. What was on the list the doctor recommended?

Zilla1 · 28/09/2020 11:50

What it the 'it' you don't trust, OP?

Mrsjayy · 28/09/2020 11:53

Aqueous cream is brilliant cheap as anything and you can slather it on , i like e45 too
