I would say sales assistant at a supermarket , too repetitive for me.

OP posts:
QuestionableMouse · 27/09/2020 20:59

At a boarding school that had horses. I worked 45-50 hours a week (at 19) and was paid £40 as a training wage. Got hardly any training, the boss was horrible to me, and walked out one day and never went back.

@madcatladyforever

Working for a snotty bitch in a Brighton clinic. I did not fit their image because I was overweight and "apparently" everyone complained about me. Rubbish, I've had numerous jobs in loads of similar clinics and everyone loved me. Luckily I'm old enough to know my own worth and not be crushed by people like this. My current job is great and nobody ever says a bad word against me.
What type of clinic?
Invisablewoman · 27/09/2020 21:08

Factory work in the summer holidays while a student.

Sticking labels on the bottom of lipsticks and putting Estee Lauder talc into the box in a badly ventilated basement, being searched each day to check you'd not stolen anything.

Another year, making up those pot pourii bags. All day putting petals and dried oranges in a bag. Literally. If you got promoted you could use a glue stick to stick the bow on the bag.

BlueJava · 27/09/2020 21:08

Cleaning toilets on the night shift in an A&E department, especially at the weekend. Frequently horrific however often you do it.

Mycatisthebest · 27/09/2020 21:16

^TheClawww "8hrs a night stood at a table turning envelopes inside out.

(banks would send bags of their opened envelopes and we had to check nothing was missed)"^

Curious did you ever find anything?

Pet8 · 27/09/2020 21:17

A frozen sausage factory. Came on shift and had to find any old dirty wellies, overall and hat that fitted or was nearest your size. Mainly Male line managers who loved the power over us. (Workforce mainly made up of middle aged, older or very young women.) Absolutely hated it. Had an lonely, all uphill, walk home every night and used to sob most nights. Packed it in for my own sanity in the end and enrolled at college.

Merryoldgoat · 27/09/2020 21:18

Finance Analyst at Local Council. Soul destroying.

Disfordarkchocolate · 27/09/2020 21:21

Last job, let go in January because of mental health issues caused by the job. Caring my arse.

Proudboomer · 27/09/2020 21:21

Housekeeping in a hospital. It was not the actual work that was bad but it was generally being treated like crap by the medical staff.

PurpleFlower1983 · 27/09/2020 21:22

Call centre, one of the big banks - never felt more like a number in my life. I met some nice people though.

bathorshower · 27/09/2020 21:22

Thousands of comb-bound documents had a printing error in. I had to open up each one on a comb binding machine (evil things), take out the offending pages and replace them.

It was a summer job - thankfully my colleagues were lovely (albeit doing more interesting work!).

toodlepipsqueaks · 27/09/2020 21:25

Call centre asking for donations from unwilling people! The way they advertised it I thought it would be like Children in Need where you're just taking bank details from people who've already decided to donate 🙈

deflationexasperation · 27/09/2020 21:27

A call center.

I'd worked in loads whilst at uni. But this one listened into your calls every hour. They micro managed everything and when a long term employee went on break after the fire alarm they, the two ladies made a rude joke about him. He spoke about 4 languages, lovely guy but didn't seem neuro typical.

The agency said the company loved me and wanted me to go perm. ((I suffered two weeks).
I turned them down and said I'd never work in such a micro managed place where no trust was given to the workers and where they were so rude about long termination employees wanting a break from the hideous monotonous work.

DCIHoops · 27/09/2020 21:27

Chambermaid at Pontins when I was 17 - I only lasted 3 hours - the smell in the last chalet I walked into turned my stomach. I have nothing but admiration and respect for housekeeping staff.

JorisBonson · 27/09/2020 21:28

When I was 16 I worked at a concession bit in a department store where is was £300 for a cushion.

I hated working there. Oh, and double glazing sales too.

APurpleSquirrel · 27/09/2020 21:28

A chambermaid in a local chain hotel - lasted one 3hr shift & never went back.

Funkypolar · 27/09/2020 21:30

I did some temping as a medical secretary. Clinicians looking down on me, angry and upset patients shouting at me on the phone, spending hours a day audio typing,

EinsteinaGogo · 27/09/2020 21:30

@YewandOak

Working in a factory (Clarks shoes) Mindnumbingly boring.

What did you do to pass the time?

deflationexasperation · 27/09/2020 21:31

Pet 8
That sounds utterly soul destroying.
I think people who own these places (then post on sm about their amazing lives) should by law be forced to do everything they can to make the job as bearable as possible!!

At least buy the workers boots and personal clothing. Make it as nice as possible.. My consonciuse wouldn't let me work people like that and on night shifts. I did night shifts once but again in a call center. It was just me and 4 others. I was actually very comfortable there, able to take in home comforts and I managed to shed Weight, every hour I ran up and down the stairs and then did sit ups!!

But the body clock fuck up left me weak emotionally and crying....

UsernameN0Tavailable · 27/09/2020 21:32

Fish and chip shop. It took 3 showers to get the smell out my hair, and I worked every other day so constantly stank of chippy, I had burns all over my arms from oil splashes and the fryers spay oil all over the floor making it like an ice rink so I stacked it at least once a week - knocked myself out once. Did it for 3 years while I was at uni.

mineofuselessinformation · 27/09/2020 21:32

Working in a seed packing factory, processing returns.
Rotten and sprouting seeds were usual, with the odd dead and partially rotted / dessicated mouse thrown in for variety.

deflationexasperation · 27/09/2020 21:34

Einstein I imagine she tucked into war and peace and learned code.

LeahDownTheLane · 27/09/2020 21:35

I worked in car hire for local council. This was back in 2006, I expect they’re still trying to figure out what the hell went wrong with their accounts. It was me, sorry.

Plussizejumpsuit · 27/09/2020 21:36

Working at Waitrose in a wealthy part of London. I've always been a bit of a eat the rich type but Jesus christ it absolutely had an impact on my faith in humanity. I was studying for my masters at the time and needed a job where I could work weekends. So not only were the customers awful I worked every weekend, long shifts starting very early. It genuinely contributed to a decline in my mental health.

There were some lovely customers but honestly it was a handful per day. I actually don't think the company themselves are that bad. So don't really want to be harsh to John Lewis or Waitrose. I shopped there before I worked there. Although it's several years ago I still feel familiar with their products and love going to Waitrose. Oddly enough! But I regularly have anxiety dreams I have to work there again.

BoudicasBoudoir · 27/09/2020 21:37

I’ve had several crappy jobs - cleaner in a grotty pub, freezing farm work, stuffing envelopes in a garage - but my worst job ever was working in a ‘nice’ shop in a posh bit of central London with possibly the meanest set of bitches on the planet.
