The worst ever toothache

NoRoomInBed · 26/09/2020 21:07

I've got the worst ever tooth ache. I seen dentist he numbed me up to pull the bastard thing but had a reaction to the numbing stuff. Numbing stuff has worn off. I'm breastfeeding and have asthma so can only take paracetamol. I've reached my 8 for 24 hours. Just off phone and cant do anything just now. Appointment tomorrow.

Aibu to take more paracetamol when these ones wear off. Or to even say fuck it and take cocodamol?

you poor thing op. did the clove oil work? it’s brilliant. be careful as it does kind of burn the corners of your mouth

NoRoomInBed · 27/09/2020 09:13

Yeah glove oil helped a little. Tastes horrible though. I'm seriously considering taking some really strong pain killers and just not feeding until they wear off. "Baby" is 11 months

What really strong painkillers are you thinking of taking?

What reaction did you have to the anaesthetic?

Now you can take paracetomol again make sure you take cocodamol, you can take this breastfeeding. Hopefully your dentist can see you

Blueshmoo · 27/09/2020 10:34

What reaction did you have that he couldn't go ahead with treatment? Havnt heard of this before.

NoRoomInBed · 27/09/2020 10:45

Had a reaction to the adrenaline in the numbing stuff. Heart rate reached 150bpm shaking. Nearly fainted. They then said they didn't want to pull the tooth. He injected me 3 times so maybe it was just too much.

I've done it - one of the standard dental anaesthetics (I think it might be one with something intended to constrict blood vessels and reduce blood loss) made me dizzy and faint (and it didn't do that much to numb the area).
NoRoomInBed · 27/09/2020 12:58

Urgh dentists finally called and they cant do anything today 😭 unless I want to travel 112 miles away. I think the antibiotics have kicked in though it's not blinding pain just a dull ache now

OP posts:
DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 27/09/2020 14:17

Thats a normal reaction to the aneasthetic if the adrenaline gets into your blood. Which it can. Its just what adrenaline does to your body. If it happens again I really would just take 10 minutes, have a drink and proceed. No reason you cant take out the tooth

Thats a bit crap OP, hope you can get seen tomorrow

NoRoomInBed · 27/09/2020 15:01

Yeah they gave me glucose to stop the reaction as my sugars were low as I've not eaten anything. Thank you everyone for your kind words. I managed an hours nap just now going to make soup then head back to my nest 😴

FYI you can take cocodamol while breastfeeding. Medical professionals in my experience very rarely know what does and does not pass into breast milk. They just go by the label on the medication which is usually incredible cautious. If you do your own research you will see it is fine.

shas19 · 27/09/2020 23:17

I've always suffered with tooth pain so use the strongest cocodamol at 30/500, mixed with two 200mg ibuprofen/nurofen but I saw you cant take that. Try orajel, also solpadine soluble. Swill it around the tooth and swallow. Tooth pain is the worst

SenorFrog · 27/09/2020 23:23

You have my sympathies, I'd rather go through labour than have toothache.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 28/09/2020 00:17

You may not have any at home, but gargling with hydrogen peroxide helps.
You can buy it in any chemist (diluted 3% is the normal I think) - also great for sore throats. Tastes foul, but as well as killing off bacteria, it has a numbing effect.

NoRoomInBed · 28/09/2020 08:23

Waiting for the dentists to call today see if they can get me in. Cant wait for it to be gone

OP posts:
Alonelonelyloner · 28/09/2020 08:48

Oh no! I was just checking in and hoping desperately that they had sorted it.
You can't go on like this.
I'm getting sympathy pains. I swear toothache is worse than labour.
I would've just gone to a&e by now (I did with my son once who was almost passing out with toothache).
I hope they call quickly.

NoRoomInBed · 28/09/2020 09:30

Dont know if it's the infection or lack of food but feeling a bit light headed just now and shaky xx

LockdownLemon · 28/09/2020 10:16

You can buy Orajel at chemists - it has a local anaesthetic in it and works instantly, but does not last long. Might give you some relief for a while.

NoRoomInBed · 28/09/2020 11:11

Woo hoo dentist at 11.30 never thought I'd be so happy. sounded nice on the phone. hAving a horlicks with a bit of sugar in to see if that helps. Will update later 😊

Still have the bastard tooth. They cant get it numb as the infection is in the way. More antibiotics prescribed. Tooth is now in agony even though its suppose to be numb

TheFormidableMrsC · 28/09/2020 12:32

It sounds like you have dry socket if you've had a tooth removed. That is an horrific pain I am told. It can be packed and you need antibiotics. You have to be extremely careful for a good week after having a tooth removed to avoid this. Hopefully dentist will sort it out.

TheFormidableMrsC · 28/09/2020 12:33

Sorry OP, I misread your post and thought you'd had tooth taken out. Hope they get it out soon, but please heed advice about dry socket as that's on a whole other level....

Irishamac · 28/09/2020 12:48

You can get something called Orajel which numbs it for a while.
I feel your pain, Tootache is horrendous!

SquigglePigs · 28/09/2020 12:57

Sorry to hear you're suffering so much. I had a tooth out a few weeks ago and was in blinding pain for the week or two before that. I'm breastfeeding too and definitely no problem with co-codamol. I had a long chat with a pharmacist friend about what and when I took stuff. Sadly I found ibuprofen better than paracetamol but anything will help you.

I second the orajel mentioned above, or anbesol (both available on Amazon).

Also heat works better than cold for the pain - use a heat pack that you microwave, then hold to the outside of your face. It made such a difference to me sleeping! I did it so much my toddler was copying me!

As you will have to ration your painkillers with only being allowed paracetamol rather than mixing that and ibuprofen can I suggest making sure you have enough to get through the night. No matter how bad it is in the day it will be 100x worse in the middle of the night. Also sleeping a little elevated will help because it reduces the blood pressure in your mouth.

Hope the antibiotics do the job soon and you can get it out.

Emmnooo · 28/09/2020 13:01

Op , did you get the tooth pulled?? I’m asking as I have just been through absolute hell with dry socket but that happens a few days after... If you get a weird taste or smell from your mouth go see the dentist again ASAP.

NoRoomInBed · 28/09/2020 13:28

No he didn't manage to numb it enough the infection is pushing the numbing stuff away from the tooth roots. Since he disturbed the infection even more my face as swell even more feeling like shit. Appointment on thursday to try again xx
