To ask if this is legal?

I have somebody on my Facebook who has set up a page raffling off gifts. Will sell x amount of tickets at £x but they price the tickets so that they are always making a profit from it.

Constantly posting numerous raffles each day and sending messages/tagging me and other people in them to get them to participate. It started to become annoying so I have left the group.

Aibu to wonder if it is legal in the first place?

During lock down a locall cafe has been doing this - the prizes being a cooked breakfast delivered or an afternoon tea !

I have no idea if it's legal. I was added to a similar group and left it shortly after. Annoyed the crap out of me. I know they insisted that when people paid by PayPal it had to be through 'gifts' not for goods etc as they could get in trouble for making money on it so probably not legal tbh!

I think they'll need a gambling licence from the council to do this. So technically, it is illegal, but I guess the easiest thing is to just not buy tickets or leave the FB group?

No there are really strict rules around raffles. Report them OP. Def not sounding legal!

It's not illegal to make a profit from a raffle but, as PP has said, you haveto have a license to run one.
