That this has taken the shine off my hols?

Am currently on holiday in the UK. Have had a lovely break, weather has been kind to us, no WiFi here so no temptation to do any work, it's been so relaxing and a much needed change of scene (as I have been working from home since early March and basically seen no one in that time aside from partner and DCs).

So far so good...except eldest DC who had to go home early for work just phoned to tell me the boiler isn't working. Again. It's 10 years old but this is the 3rd or 4th repair, last one was only last year. Just get this complete sinking feeling now that it's going to be hugely expensive to fix, or take ages and be a complete palava, or both, it's properly taken the shine off my hols and now I'm feeling anxious and worried. Last time it took 2 weeks to get it fixed which was only bearable as we had showers at the gym daily - but can't do that now due to Covid so God knows how we'll manage.

Honestly almost wish I'd not come away...AIBU to be worrying like this and for it to have spoilt my holiday?

Oh that's shit OP. I wish your eldest DC hadn't told you (unless he needs help sorting it).

Do you have the money to pay for repair? If you do, don't worry about this, just chalk it up to life and worry about it later.

Enjoy your hols, the boiler isn't going anywhere. As that TV ad says, 'He'll just have to smell'.

It's horrible when things like this happen but it's just life. Don't let it take the shine off your holiday - the boiler would have broken whether you went on holiday or not Smile. Also, you don't know if it's going to be a big job to repair it - our boiler is a bit temperamental and something often goes wrong when we put the heating on for the first time in a year.

He'd discovered there was no hot water this morning, but thought maybe I'd set it to only come on in the eve, then when he got home from work and there still was none he called me. He was at his gfs yesterday so don't know if this happened before then or when really.

I do have the money (although I was putting it towards a car, that will have to wait) so I know I'm luckier than many, it just seems there's always something breaking...one step forward etc!

It might be something I can fix myself though I'm not optimistic, I got DS to reset it as I normally would and it didn't work :/ but I'll try again when I get home.

What's worrying me more is all the messing about trying to get it fixed as that always is such a hassle. I had a great guy fix it last year but I think he's now returned to his home country. Hoping that may be wrong, or that he's back in the UK now.

Am definitely not asking on social media...last time I asked for recommendations for boiler repairers on my local FB group I ended up with a guy who (despite about 10 people recommending him) tried to rip me off and then got really rude and aggressive... nightmare!

If it's a combi boiler is there enough water pressure in the system? I usually have to top mine up a couple of times a year - always have the panic moment of no hot water, think the worst, then look and see the needle is in the red. Open the taps underneath it, top up the pressure, and good to go - phew!

Hope yours is something similar, and even if not , as you asked, yabu to let it ruin your holiday...

it is annoying but would have happened whether you were home or not, bemoan it, acknowledge that it's shitty, then let it go and make the most of your holiday.
Pick it up again when you get home and have to deal with it.

Be glad you have hot water where you are now! Live in the moment.

It's not a combi boiler, however it does need the pressure topping up occasionally or it cuts out, however I had checked that with DS and the pressure was fine, so it's not that. I suspect it's a repeat of the same issue that it always is, which is that there's a pipe that water comes out (probably not explaining well, I am not technical at all!) and this gets blocked all the time, so the water can't leave the boiler and it cuts our. I've previously had the pipe cut off, it left disconnected, a whole new pipe fitted. And it only solves the problem in the short term for some reason.

Obviously it might not be that but I suspect it is. Just have that sinking feeling it's going to be costly and time consuming.

Managed not to dwell too much on it last night...now on the way home fingers crossed I can sort it out myself...
