What do you think of a person when you hear they have a more than average amount of degrees/postgrads/masters etc and qualifications?

Do you think...good for them,they must be smart,have ambition, drive etc!

Or.

Do you think...god could they not make their mind up and/or stick to something??

I haven’t paid for any of mine. First was before tuition fees, then I did one with an nhs bursary, my employers have paid for all the postgrad stuff.

babyguffingtonstrikesagain · 26/09/2020 19:13

I would think 'lucky them bring so financially privaledged that they can take all those years out to study'

SheepandCow · 26/09/2020 19:16

@babyguffingtonstrikesagain

Why would you assume they took years out?

It's perfectly possible to work full-time and study. Loads of people have been doing that for years.

Other than my UG degree which I did straight from school I've worked full time throughout all my qualifications and all my post grad stuff has been paid for by my employer.

Gobbycop · 26/09/2020 20:11

Do they ever want a job or just study.

CandyLeBonBon · 26/09/2020 21:01

I can't understand how people don't realise that you can work AND study. Some of us have no choice!!

SheepandCow · 26/09/2020 21:10

@Gobbycop

Do they ever want a job or just study.
Who?
notacooldad · 26/09/2020 21:11

I dont think anything negative.
If anything I think they are clever and possibly interesting.
I've known a few people that have had a successful career with their initial degree and in later life took a different degree and had a second career.
Theres no point in being critical about someones educational choices if it doesn't affect me.

notacooldad · 26/09/2020 21:13

Do they ever want a job or just study
You can do both you know.
And guess what! I did both and had two babies while studying and working Go me!!!

pincertoe · 26/09/2020 21:42

Depends on subjects and time line. I we to college/uni with someone who stayed in education for a long tome doing multiplication courses in completely different fields.

That said I know someone with a plan which meant working abroad but met future partner at uni so took a further qualification so they could work here. Like moves on and changes.

Ginfordinner · 26/09/2020 21:46

This thread is venturing into The Four Yorkshire men territory.

Some people have the resources to work, bring up a family single handed and study for a string of qualifications. Some people don't.

I hate the kind of thread that descends into "I did it so I don't see why anyone else can't"

cloudylemonade13 · 26/09/2020 22:05

@Smallsteps88

How are the people who’ve never worked funding all these degrees?
By also working - sometimes several jobs - while they're doing the degrees
Smallsteps88 · 26/09/2020 22:13

Well then they’re not the people I’m asking about!

I think I contributed to that but it wasn't meant in the way you have said. It was in response to the Do they ever want a job or just study comment to say.' Well actually you can to both at the same time.
I had tons of support and encouragement from my husband.

CorianderLord · 26/09/2020 22:31

Postgraduate loan - £10k for anyone eligible (most people are). Started in around 2017.

notacooldad · 26/09/2020 22:40

Who are all these employers funding uni qualifications, out of interest
I think they must have had money to afford to do more than one degree!
Local Authority paid for one of
mine. I paid in installments for the other one. I sold my car and got a cheap run around. The amount of the monthly payment for the car was less than the tuition fee. I got time to study on two lots of mat leave.

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 26/09/2020 22:47

Every employer I’ve worked for has funded qualifications, as long as they enhanced your skill set in your field. There was a limit on how much they’d contributed per year, but it can be a great benefit.

CandyLeBonBon · 26/09/2020 22:51

@Ginfordinner I did that. It was hard, but if I said that I did it as a single parent, it was to counter the idea that studying multiple degrees means you're feckless rich, lazy, untidy or neglectful.

As far as I'm concerned, if you want to study and you think the ends justify the means in terms of student finance etc, then go for it. Nothing else.

Ginfordinner · 26/09/2020 22:53

How many of these companies who have funded degrees in the past have the financial resources to continue to do so now?

notacooldad · 26/09/2020 23:39

How would we know? 🤷‍♀️
Someone from my department has been funded by LA this year to do their degree.

gwenneh · 26/09/2020 23:40

The company I work for hasn't stopped it, and a quick search shows that it's still listed on the HR websites for my last two employers.

It's an important retention benefit so our CEO kept it as an essential.

chuppachupchup · 26/09/2020 23:41

@Ginfordinner my niece in Ireland has just got into a paid apprenticeship program in microbiology. It's with a global pharmaceutical company...2 days in uni, 3 days in work.€25 per year, paid uni fees, a substantial bonus each year, paid health insurance, 10% employer pension contributions, and a laptop. All straight from school at age 18!!

Kanaloa · 26/09/2020 23:42

I don’t judge people on how many degrees they have, whether they have 5 or none. I see how they act around me, how they make me feel and if we get on well, and judge them on that. People with multiple degrees are all different (as are people with no degree) so I can’t really judge them as a group.

SueEllenMishke · 27/09/2020 02:13

Lots of organisations have dedicated staff development funds that are ring fenced. Some will make staff sign training contracts which protects their investment to some extent.
Imworthit · 27/09/2020 02:27

@MissPoldark

Lots of time on their hands. Completing a masters is more about time and money than it is about intelligence.
Is it fuck 😂 who told you that crock of shit.
