Call back at 2

I think I might have a UTI. Decided not to ring the surgery first thing as not very urgent and thought the lines would be very busy.

I have just rung and after the obligatory Covid messages and about a five minute wait so pretty good really I just had the shortest conversation ever with the receptionist.

I had barely got out my first sentence I think I have a UTI before she barked at me to ring back at 2 to be put on the afternoon list and then goodbye. That was it.

I suppose it is all this covid stuff but I found myself tearing up.

I deliberately didn't ring first thing to avoid spending ages listening to an engaged signal but I suppose I can now have that experience at 2pm rather than 8am.

I suppose she's had a rotten morning but a nicer tone would have been much appreciated.

YABU - you want a doctor to diagnose you and prescribe something if needed - then you need to call for an appointment first thing - it is urgent - you can't wait a week with a UTI can you? The receptionist was correct.

you could visit your chemist or but some over the counter cystitis medicine.

LavenderSatin · 25/09/2020 11:53

Yanbu, no need for someone to be snappy for no good reason! Hope you’re on the mend soon Flowers

MrsxRocky · 25/09/2020 11:56

The one positive of covid is that my Dr surgery no longer do the am pm call times.
We now have an app where we can write down issue and it goes directly to Dr and is responded to very quickly.
In meantime take over counter remedy and see if it helps :).
But yea I agree. I hated the attitude of the receptionists.

Notcontent · 25/09/2020 12:00

I had to ring my gp practice today and was dreading it - but I was pleasantly surprised to be able to speak to a doctor who is going to see me later today.

CarlaH · 25/09/2020 12:17

I think or hope she might just have been having a bad day. The receptionists there are usually quite pleasant compared to some of the horror stories I read online.

Things are a bit grim all around so somebody talking to you harshly probably impacts more than it should.

I didn't even have time to say I'll ring back later then before she slammed the phone down.

In Scotland we have to go to the pharmacy as a first port of call for a UTI it’s on loads of posters in the reception so you might be best to visit the pharmacist first.

Oh right. I haven't had one before so I had no idea.

I did ring the surgery and am awaiting a call back.

I don't even know if I have one I am just on the loo every hour or more.

Oh, FFS, don't be so precious! The receptionist probably had multiple people queuing and several calls waiting. You are an adult not a baby and she gave you the right information.

That's not totally accurate. It's dependant on things like severity and age, and it's optional, not obligatory.

I switched to gp at hand - got a virtual call with a nurse she posted me a urine sample bottle - I dropped it off at the clinic and they called me back with results in 24 hours -

Would really recommend- never returning to regular gp!

Not sure if your in an area that has this service or not though

Cherrybalm · 25/09/2020 16:09

ouch - hope you feel better soon, UTI's are bloody horrible! I used to find sitting in a warm bath and drinking lots of water used to really help as I didnt have to keep going to the toilet and of course the water helps flush your system out, taking any nasties in your urinary tract with it.

hopefully you get a call back soon with a prescription for it. if you're on the toilet constantly and hardly passing anything and/or its burning than sounds like a UTI.

ignore the rude receptionist. I hate ringing the GPs for this exact reason, or I get spoken to like I'm stupid/wasting their time.

CarlaH · 25/09/2020 16:40

Have had a phone call back from a lovely doctor.

I have to take a urine sample in.

She doesn't think it is a UTI but will do a dip anyway. I have no idea what that actually means but I feel better for having spoken to somebody anyway.

Thanks for the good wishes.

We also have the app. I have had medication prescribed over the phone and been called in when it needed it.
