To worry about cat saliva in eye?

I asked this question yesterday and a helpful poster reassured me.

I am an anxious type though and have been back on the internet reading horror stories 😫

Two days ago I leant in to stroke cat and he shook his head and I am pretty sure salvia went in.

I immediately washed my hands and splashed my eye out.

My eyes always feel a little irritated anyway. They get very dry (computer work and autoimmune disease).

Not sure if I am just imagining my eye is worse than usual.

Doesn't help that it's my "good" eye cat spat in!!

It is the fleas and ticks in cats that can make their saliva so toxic my cat is overdue it's treatments for this

on the bright side it is mostly young cats and kittens that are the worst and my cat is elderly.

I have a very slobbery cat and I am sure I have got cat saliva in my eyes numerous times (he likes to put his face right in front of mine!) and I am fine. If you're really worried you could ring a pharmacist for advice.

Because I have an AI disease and take steroids I worry more about my resistance to disease.

My cat once sneezed into my open mouth. I'm sure you will be fine

Bwlch · 25/09/2020 10:56

I once got sneezed on by a cow. I nearly drowned.

UpToonGirl · 25/09/2020 10:59

My cat used to wait until I got close to him then shake his head and get saliva all over my face, including my eyes. It was disgusting but didn't do me any harm.

Your eye probably feels weird in the same way you get itchy when someone mentions nits! Having said that as you do have lowered immunity keep an eye on it (!) and get in touch with the docs if you do feel like it's something to worry about.

Optometrist here - if anything untoward was going to happen, it would have happened by now.
Your tears will have flushed your eye out very quickly, the risk would only be if you had a small scratch/abrasion on your eye when it happened.

@cannotfigureitout

I have AI and wouldn't worry about cat salvia.

I'ts saliva. It's meant to kill bacteria and germs. So fret not. It's fine.

Don't add steroids. You don't need too

I have three cats - I've been licked, rubbed on, sneezed on, scratched, nibbled and all sorts - I'm absolutely fine and have never had any issues.

You'll be fine, I promise Grin

Toddlerteaplease · 25/09/2020 15:38

I also have a very slobbery and sneezy cat. I've had it everywhere. It'll be fine.

Babyboomtastic · 25/09/2020 15:54

One cat we had used to dribble in her sleep, and more than once she fell asleep by my head and it dribbled into my eye. It was fine.

cannotfigureitout · 26/09/2020 08:21

Thanks everyone you've been great and I feel so much better about it now.

Eye seems fine today.

Didn't realise there were so many slobbery cats around always thought that was more of a dog thing!

Maybe my next pet should be a hamster - bet I'll now get loads of posts about dribbly slobbery hamsters 😂
