Self employment grant

Could someone help me to understand this.

Viable jobs will be paid nearly 80% of their wages, combining 22% payment from gov and the rest from the employer.

Self employed will receive 20% of average monthly income and that is it? That’s the total help afforded.

Why are employed people given nearly 80% the same as before but self employed 20%.

This is extremely unfair.

I can't see the problem:

  1. For non self-employed the Govt pays 22% salary.
  2. For self-employed, Govt pays 20% average profits up to a total of £1,875, spanning November to January next year
+ deferring payment of Income tax due July to January 2021. + delay in vat payments and splitting payments over 11 months. + Business rates holidays. + £10k grants with business costs. + Loan extensions etc.

How is it not fair?
Employers pay 55% to employees for working 1/3 hours.
If SE, you are your own employer so can also pay yourself 55% for doing only 1/3 hours if you wish.

@Itsabeautifuldayheyhey

Got it, thanks.

Being self employed there’s no guaranteed 55% income as there is when you are employed.

Many self employed people’s work has dried up due to coronavirus. So there would be a grant of 20% which would then be taken off a persons universal credit if they get it.

Most self employed micro business weren’t eligible for any of the loans or business rates even first time round sadly.

Why weren't they eligible?

CallmeFP · 24/09/2020 16:42

@Itsabeautifuldayheyhey

If you look at each of the measures you mentioned except for the SEISS grants and income support, postponing taxes the micro businesses and some other businesses did not qualify for the medium to large sized self employed ones. You’re not the only person who thinks they were available to all self employed people.

You both get the same level of government support, but the employed get wages from their employer as well. If you're self employed, you can choose to pay yourself what employers are paying the employed. Their income has also dried up, it's not just the SE who are finding it hard.

Why should the government act as government support and also employer for the SE?
