We live in a small terrace house which is right on the road (no front garden). We have blinds but obviously have to open them a little to let daylight in. I am peed off with people constantly walking past and peering in the window. One woman just walked past and she literally craned her neck right round (exorcist style!) to get a bloody good look! AAARRGH. What is it with people?

Oh, it's impossible to resist. It's like a magnet for the eyes...

People are basically nosey.

edam · 09/10/2007 18:37

Very rude of them. You could always put a sign in the window. 'If you can read this, your mother obviously forgot to teach you any manners', perhaps.

smurfgirl · 09/10/2007 18:38

Oh we have this too - pain in the bum.

Troutpout · 09/10/2007 18:45

Can you do a half voile thing? on a rod or summat halfway down the sash window?.
We have this ..so the top two panes are open (which are above head height) so you get sunlight (still get the nosey people on the bus occasionally though)!. The lower 2 panes are covered so the people walking past can't gawp

WinkyWinkola · 09/10/2007 18:46

Or plantation shutters - they're great for privacy but let in loads of light.

Erm, I'm quite nosey, I'm afraid and always peer in living room windows when I know it's out of order. Sorry! I like to see how people have done their homes and get inspiration. I should knock on the door really as it is very rude, you're quite right.

heifer · 09/10/2007 18:57

We have a great view of fields and wood in front of us, but in front of that is a path and almost opposite us is a cycle path..

This means that we have a great view we want to see but means that everyone who walked on the cycle path basically looked straight into our front window.

We had some voiles made that basically let us look out at the view (and the light in), but people can't see into the house.

Go and see your local material shop/designer type bod and see if they recommend anything that lets light in but keep beakys out.

we are the same i will be sat playing with dd during the day and turn around and someone will be waking pst the window and beadying in i just stare right back at them till they look away

Ooh, this thread has just brought me out in a total body blush - we'd just moved to a small Norfolk village and on our first trip down to the pub I nosed into one of the cottages along the way! I thought the place was empty - it looked totally unoccupied, no pictures on the wall, no curtains, etc - thought it was up for sale with no tenants. Peered in through the window to find a table full of people staring back at me - the cottage had a sunken floor!!! Horrendous - even worse 10 mins later when they all walked into the pub too. I was known as the nosey bint after that. We've moved away now but old friends still ask if I've done any peeping lately - and ashamed to say, I have .

But at least I know I'm guilty - no, YANBU!

spray them in the eye with insect repellent.

xXxamyxXx · 09/10/2007 23:18

tap tap thats me at your window

SSSandy2 · 09/10/2007 23:20

Or could you have a camera ready or a video and pretend to take a photo or film them?

Lovecat · 10/10/2007 06:47

My parents live on a main road and hate net curtains so we grew up with this - we found an over-eager wave to whoever's nosing sent them on their way quickly enough!

captainmummy · 10/10/2007 12:16

I actually get embarrassed if I catch someone looking in our windows, we live on a main road so there are always people walking past and glancing in. I tend to try to hide behind furniture if I catch their eyes!

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 10/10/2007 12:22

I hate people peering in my window (which they do, frequently). It was worse when I lived in a lovely village in the country, though. All Summer we had people who would even climb up the bank and peer over the wall to look at our house like it was some Disney park. I had the last laugh though, because our house was a shitty little bungalow, and I bet they were really disappointed once they had made that much effort. Pissed me off when we were in the garden though, and a couple of ramblers' heads would poke up over the wall to get a good look.

nospeak · 10/10/2007 12:24

THanks everyone, I hadn't considered voile, will have a look.

Lol at the Ramblers.

I had an upstairs flat next to a bus stop once. Lots of bored people with nowt better to do.

Theres a reason why people used to have net curtains you know. Don't know why people got snotty about them.

captainmummy · 10/10/2007 12:47

what about a pretty lace panel over the window? very victorian.
