To accept a job in the gym right now given covid etc?

NC for this.

I've been offered a weekend job in a gym as a cleaner, it's just a little part time job to get me out of the house but I'll need to register as self employed if I were to take it. I wouldn't be an employee of the company so no furlough or any protection like that.

My concern is given the unpredictability of lockdowns and everything going on with covid, would I be wasting my time going through the rigmarole of registering as self employed and potentially disrupting my universal credit (which me and my children rely on) if they may be closed again soon.

WWYD?

Or do you think gyms will remain open now?

How much does it pay OP - you can earn up to £1000 without having to register as SE. I'd just start and see how it goes.

The gym I go to are very good at social distancing machines are far apart and it's very regulated - I think they will stay open.

A job is a job in this climate so I'd take it

ButtWormHole · 23/09/2020 19:28

My gym is the safest place I go. Temperature checks on arrival, social distancing and cleaning your own machines.

It's £9 per hour (4 hours per shift) on Saturdays and Sundays

She did offer me Wednesdays too but I can't do that without going over the £290 monthly cap on what I can earn without UC being reduced which I rely on to pay my rent (2 DC special needs)

I've sent an email explaining that and offering every other Wednesday as a compromise as that wouldn't be as big a deduction so will see what she says.

Good to know they may stay open Smile

As it's so part time I couldn't afford to risk my UC going tits up at the moment which is why I was a bit worried about it potentially closing again.

It sounds like “false” self employment, and would likely be classed as employment for tax purposes.

Suggest looking for something on better terms.

I'm not familiar with these things I must say. I was surprised to hear I would need to register as self employed for something like that part time.

Do it's dodgy then?

Have a look at reputable websites and helplines eg ACAS. Sounds like they’re just seeking to avoid paying paye, and for annual leave.

Amiwastingmytime2020 · 23/09/2020 20:01

Thank you Dozer. I'm looking now and it's seeming more and more unappealing.

I'm disappointed as it would have been perfect for me.

I would be cautious, OP.

I know pp are saying they think their gym is safe and practicing social distancing etc. but even if that’s true, you have to remember gyms were one of the last places to open and would likely be one of the first to close again due to the nature of indoor spaces, heavy breathing etc.
