To think I'm over the hill at 36 in terms of career?

I'm currently a SAHM, studying to be an antenatal teacher. I would have liked to have been a midwife and I'm wondering if I'm just too old, darn it?

AIBU to think I could still do it and work as one when I'm say 45?

Never say never-might be bloody hard work (will be probably! ) but go for it just think of the life -skills & maturity you could bring to the job!!

You are not too old - you are the same age as me and I have just finished an Access Course and hope do go in for Nursing soon.

Roseylea · 09/10/2007 18:11

Of course you can do it. Someone I know of similar age has just started midwifery training after years of really wanting to.

Go for it - you want to get to the age of 80 or so, look back over your life and say "I'm glad I did that."

No you're not too old!

You'll have 20 years of work left at age 45. 20 years is a long time

Definitely not too old. I wish I was still so young

yogimum · 09/10/2007 18:25

my friend qualified about 2 years ago and she's in her forties. Gor for it.

Sweatheart, women are literarly crying out for mid-wives. You've been there done that and got the t-shirt. Now go for a new t-shirt. I'm sure some older mums (like me) would appreciate some life skills you can throw in. Tell us some funny stories while your in training.

WinkyWinkola · 09/10/2007 18:45

Oh my goodness. I'm so pleased that you all think I should go for it! My word. Thank you.

When I've had my kids (planning four, got two), I'll go for it. I'm enjoying the teacher training right now too.

You are as young as your feel.

The likelyhood is that the governant will make us all work until 70 because of the pensions time bomb. You probably have at least 20 years ahead of you.

Winky
You should be able to work as one for as long as you fancy. The lady who did our course was into her 50s. My independent midwife was absolutely fantastic and just turned fifty and will work for years to come. If you're worried about the number of years which have passed since you'd personally given birth, don't. Can you combine this with doula work? There will never be too many experienced hands at these sorts of things.
