To take cuttings from trees in public parks to make an autumn wreath?

Posted here for traffic... it's more of an is it legal? On the one hand, I think it's not too different from collecting blackberries, pine cones or conkers. But going out with secateurs and an Ikea bag (classy) might look a bit CF.

AIBU?

Very CF! And maybe illegal depending on the by-laws of the forest. Seek permission from a landowner/farmer or use stuff in your own garden

workhomesleeprepeat · 23/09/2020 12:00

Lol my mum does stuff like this and I didn’t realise it was wrong until my ex was horrified by me picking flowers in a park Grin

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 23/09/2020 12:00

You can't do that..

Fallen branches are one thing, but you can't go around helping yourself to bits of trees.

Porcupineinwaiting · 23/09/2020 12:01

No not legal unless you have the permission of the landowner.

seayork2020 · 23/09/2020 12:02

If you ask permission and get it then fine, other wise no

namechangeinamillion · 23/09/2020 12:02

Even my pre-schooler knows he shouldn't pick flowers that aren't in our own garden.

MereDintofPandiculation · 23/09/2020 12:04

Very CF to pick stuff which is for the communal good. It may be only you, but if people see you doing it, they may readjust what they feel is acceptable, and soon there is a noticeable impact.

You might be OK with a hedge that is obviously about to be trimmed.

ILikeTrains · 23/09/2020 12:07

So many people seem to believe that because it's in a public park that it's public property. Do you know how long holly bushes take to grow? If everyone helped themselves to 'just enough' to make an Xmas wreath the poor old bush would be stripped before you could say 'HoHoHo'!

Definitely ask permission before getting the pruners out.

TealIris · 23/09/2020 12:11

Unfortunately it would be unreasonable. I get why you want to do it but if everybody did the same it would be awful.

mintwater · 23/09/2020 12:14

Right... Loud and clear, thanks. I don't have anything like this in my garden hence the question. Will refrain!

This is one thing that screams Cf to me

You take what you need to make a wreath and leave less enjoyment for everyone else

Kanaloa · 23/09/2020 12:14

I think you can collect leaves and sticks from the ground, that’s probably helpful. I don’t think you can cut the trees, unfortunately. If anyone who lives near you has a tree in there garden you could possible ask them?

BonnieTellyLass · 23/09/2020 12:14

cross post Smile

Kanaloa · 23/09/2020 12:15

In their garden, I meant.

LuluBellaBlue · 23/09/2020 12:17

I wouldn’t go to busy public parks..... but would go out into nature.
I’d read up on the basic guidelines of foraging, never take from the first tree / plant you see, ensure there’s plenty more for other people / nature etc.... there’s a few more I can’t think of.

I do lots of foraging / collecting from the wild, done responsibly there’s no harm done.

netstaller · 23/09/2020 20:21

Very CF don't do it

RunningFromInsanity · 23/09/2020 20:33

It’s technically illegal but if you go into the middle of a woods and you don’t decimate the trees I can’t see you are going to do that much harm.

lachy · 23/09/2020 20:47

Definitely CF territory.

MissPoldark · 23/09/2020 20:58

Even worse - I once saw someone from the local flower shop taking cuttings in the park which were presumably then used in their bouquets.
Needless to say I reported it to the council.

SnackSizeRaisin · 23/09/2020 21:07

Go further off the beaten track and make sure it's not an area that's visible from a road or path. As long as it's just for one wreath I think it's ok. Not in a public park though!

sleepylittlebunnies · 23/09/2020 21:08

After strong winds you might find plenty of useful bits on the ground. Otherwise knock on a neighbour’s door or ask a friend if you could have some cuttings, you could make them a wreath too.

AfterSchoolWorry · 23/09/2020 21:10

Vandalism!

Can't believe you had to ask!

RaisinsRuinEverything · 23/09/2020 21:13

An autumn wreath sounds lovely! But I wouldn’t take cuttings from trees. Could you make one from fallen leaves? It’s Ok to take those and the colours are beautiful.
