Shifting the balance of power

Firstly, I acknowledge this is a nuts idea and will never happen.

I don’t even know where to begin with all the decisions that have been made over the last 6 months or so, Part of me is furious, part of me thinks the whole situation is so fucked up so how could anyone know the right thing to do (ie results of lockdown vs no lockdown).

And tonight’s broadcast really hasn’t made me feel better about anything.

So, setting aside all other political matters (and I obviosly know what I’m about to say is impossible!). I would kind of like to see Labour given power for, maybe 3-6 months, but purely for Covid matters. Would really like to see a (maybe) different take on viewing the science, taking decisions, Etc.

Pie in the sky wishing, but I would really like to see how else things could be handled. Am so fed up of any political crap from all sides, would just like someone else to have a chance to see how they handle this one big fuck off unknown. I have my reservations about most parties, but would appreciate seeing what others could (or fail) to do with this crisis.

Please can we go back to 2019!

Maybe a cross-party coalition just for Covid, nothing else ?
However, politicans almost never voluntarily share power
So that's a dream

The chief medical officer and the lead scientists would all be the same people though, so if the politicians (of whichever party) took their advice, policy would be similar.

I find current Labour statements confusing. They criticise the cost of furlough but furlough saved a huge number of jobs and there are calls for it to be extended.

I'd welcome more cross party consulting on covid, simply on the basis that two heads are better than one.

Elsewyre · 23/09/2020 02:05

What exactly would be differnt?

Labour just seem to say "that was a bad decision" with no comment what they would do until weeks/months later

Furries · 23/09/2020 02:09

@Mintjulia - yes, agree re the scientific advice would be the same. Just feel confused after watching the news and that political outcomes are different (ie Scotland no household mixing - yet all the experts across news channels said they were sharing info). So, those “final tweaks” on policies differ across the UK.

Guess I don’t have a clue, the Government don’t have a clue, but would like to see what could be done by another party - who also won’t have a clue but can easily criticise.

Can they navigate this better - if so, let them have a go.

@BigChocFrenzy - this I would like to see. All of them, formally, coming together for one crisis. No point-scoring, etc. Just a completely unanimous/no blame way to navigate the next few months at least. I couldn’t give a stuff who does best out of it politically, just make sure NHS etc are looked after and that politics doesn’t come in to how things move forward.

I’m coming from a selfish point of view - am single with no kids. I honestly can’t imagine how it is for those on here trying to navigate through this in the opposite situation.

Or they could use it as an opportunity to sabotage the other.

"Lockdown till a vaccine!"

Next election

"Look how all the businesses went bust under the torys!!"

But you wont get a unanimous decision on anything as people have differnt ideas on what's the right decision.

Even without any malice, as the decisions are being made from predictive data of complicated issues.

Lock down does it save more lives though reducing covid or cost lives through MH issues, lower tax incomes and so lower budgets in future?

Masks? Do they reduce transmission by air, or do they increase transmition by touch? (Your cheek is less likley coated than the inside of your mask, if you feel safer you wash your hands less etc)

Problem is even with a dedicated population study you dont get answer for 6+months but you need to decide today.

Do we say right Manchester wears masks Birmingham doesnt let's see what happens?
