To ask for some medical advice, UTI related.

I have symptoms of a UTI, started on Saturday and has got worse - bladder pain, some back pain and feel like I need to pee all the time.
I’m not prone to them, last and only one was 8 years ago.
Feeling miserable. Called the GP surgery this morning, they didn’t want to see me, the receptionist asked a couple of questions and said they would send a prescription to the pharmacy to be ready at 4pm. Fair enough I thought. I’ve just collected it.

It’s for 50mg Nitrofurantoin x 4 a day. I haven’t had these before. I only got 12 tablets, 3 days course. I know that’s correct for Trimethoprim, but it says on the dosage instructions that it should be a 7 day course for UTI.

Just really looking for some advice as to what is correct, don’t want to harass my GP unnecessarily, but don’t want to stop too soon and it comes back. And general advice on these antibiotics and anything else I can do would also be really helpful.

@CabernetSoWhat I’m very careful when it comes to UTIs. My mum nearly died of sepsis resulting from an undiagnosed/untreated uti a number of years ago and it took her a long time to recover. As much as I try to avoid antibiotics at any other time for infections, I would rather not risk it for this sort of thing.

So, I’m 2 days into the Nitrofurantoin and I’m feeling no better. Called the surgery and the GP has extended the course to 7 days as she feels 3 days isn’t usually enough for ‘older women’.....cheek, I’m 43 not geriatric.

Still feel like I need to pee all the time, it’s getting me down. Actually, he’s worse than the bladder pressure and pain! Awful. No burning when peeing though, which makes me wonder.

Anyway, and maybe tmi, but I feel like perhaps something else could be going on. I’d have expected the antibiotics to have at least some effect by now? Also taking d-mannose btw.
I’m now wondering if I need a low dose oestrogen cream for my fanjo ...been looking (obsessively) at other threads on similar topics, and sometimes it seems that perimenopause brings the delights of vaginal atrophy and dryness which can effect the bladder. It strikes me that have been feeling rather dry of fanny lately and it’s beginning to feel less ‘plump’ (sorry, this is awful) than it used to. God, I’m turning into a dried husk.

Will keep with the antibiotics, but please someone give me some hope?!

@TheSandgroper I didn't know she was still going!!

If you’re not feeling any better I’d take a sample to the GP and ask it to be set away for a culture. The antibiotics might not be the right ones for the infection you have. Sending sympathies - UTIs are so miserable.

I'm having the same issue. No cure yet has worked for me. Check out Professor Malone Lee. He's my last hope 🙁
There was a thread about utis recently that was on here and his name came up as recommended.

WilsonMilson · 24/09/2020 14:13

@pawsies you have my sympathies, it’s wretched. How long have you been suffering? Did it start as a uti? I’ll look into the Professor, hope it won’t come to that though. Sad

About 3 weeks, yes started at UTI but I'm prone to them so I just seem to get them regularly. Very frustrating!
