Name changed for this as apparently it’s an unpopular opinion; but I think it’s important to protect our children.

Please can I encourage you to send a letter like this into all your children’s schools.

Dear Headteacher

I am writing to inform you that (Child Name) is exempt from wearing a face covering of any kind, as per government legislation.

There are many exemptions from wearing a face mask, which incorporate hidden disabilities, including but not limited to:

(I) because of any physical or mental impairment or illness or disability (Section 6 of the equality act 2010)

(II) without severe distress

Section 6 of the equality act states that schools must not discriminate against a student because of their disability.

I am concerned that my child will be singled out for not wearing a mask and would like to remind you that this is also discriminatory.

(Childs Name) is under no obligation to provide proof of this exemption and is protected from doing so by the Data Protection Act 2018

I have also sent a copy of this letter to our solicitors.

Kind Regards
(Your Name)

Hope he never wants to work in the NHS. There you have a wear a mask - usually for the sake of other people. You just have to get on with it. You are not exempt cos you don’t like it. And you may have to keep it on for many hours.
Showing resilience and helping your child to understand that not putting themselves first is important . Much better than teaching them that if you don’t like what’s happening - threaten to sue.

Well that kid is 100% going to get bullied for the next few months

Aragog · 22/09/2020 21:58

Why would I need to send such a letter?
Seriously, if I had a school aged child why would this be necessary?

In reality few people genuinely can't wear a mask for the time spent in a corridor. Almost all are able to.

DD's boyfriend had severe asthma and only one lung works fully. He has no issue wearing a mask. I know others with expense conditions who chose to wear masks to protect others.

Obviously there are some people who genuinely can't. Many of these people are also at higher risk from Covid. It's also one of the reasons why those of us who can wear a mask should in these situations.

I can imagine exactly why your child wanted to take the letter in himself rather than mum go up with it!! Lesser of two evils at the very least.

Yes it worked - it got him a pass. However I can pretty much guarantee that had you just sent a quick email saying he was exempt so could he have a mask it would have also resulted in the same. Just without the staff rolling their eyes at the letter!

As a clinically vulnerable teacher I am very grateful that the vast majority of our parents are complying with our mask guidelines (infant school so children not asked to) as it goes a little way at helping protect me and my fellow colleagues and our Covid vulnerable children.

One of the wankiest Covid threads I’ve read on Covid so far.

Trees2905 · 22/09/2020 22:00

Honest to god OP get over yourself.

Aragog · 22/09/2020 22:01

Just asked Dh - who is a solicitor - what he'd do with such a letter if he had one copied in to him. He does have some long term clients but it's certainly not his area of law. His firm would have some form of department for disability rights, education law or similar. Mind you when I repeated it to him, his response ... He just laughed

Guess op could have some general practise type solicitor who does a little bit of everything perhaps? Still no idea what op expects the solicitor to do about it though!

TheMistressQuickly · 22/09/2020 22:01

This is making my blood boil! You’re the type of parent every school dreads.

raddledoldmisanthropist · 22/09/2020 22:03

He was given a pass today - so clearly it was worth sending it!

Yup, sending a really arsey letter was the only possible way of achieving that.

I still don’t agree with every teacher stopping to ask “where’s your mask” it is discriminatory and will have a negative impact on Mental health.

Having to show a piece of paper doesn't do nearly as much MH damage as years of parenting like this.

mumwon · 22/09/2020 22:04

is this a troll?

Comefromaway · 22/09/2020 22:06

My autistic daughter is getting more and more anxious every day because many of her classmates are not wearing masks.

I am desperate for schools and colleges to remain open. If masks help I’m all for it.

MinecraftMother · 22/09/2020 22:07

I'm a solicitor. Why would you send this letter to your solicitor?!

And it certainly doesn't do as much physical damage as contracting a viral chest infection and spreading it round.

Maybe the OP is particularly keen on having her PFB back home for another fortnight?

BashfulClam · 22/09/2020 22:08

Oh my his that’s bloody hilarious. It will
Just Mark you out as an utter idiot. The references are totally wrong and it just makes you sound like you don’t have two brain cells to rub together. Yes please send it and also to your solicitor who will all read it, piss themselves laughing then charge you a fee.

daisypond · 22/09/2020 22:09

Hm. Are you sure he was given a pass? Just because your DS told you so? No wonder he didn’t want you to deliver the letter to the teacher yourself and he said he’d do it. I wouldn’t be surprised if he threw the letter in the nearest bin and the teacher never saw it.

Scautish · 22/09/2020 22:11

@Comefromaway I have every sympathy with your daughter. I’m autistic too and seeing everyone break the rules because they think the know better makes me extremely anxious and very angry (disproportionate reactions are really hard to live with - I wish I could switch them off). But their right to not feel socially repressed by wearing a “face nappy” overrides anyone else’s rights. Twats.

Flappingflamingo · 22/09/2020 22:16

I suffer severe anxiety, I work in retail so have to wear one. I manage. Its about protecting other people, not yourself. If there's no real reason other than not liking wearing one then I think it's completely selfish

Did you really send this? I hope you've been true to your word and have sent a copy to your solicitor for their records (and so they can have a good laugh)? What a load of bollocks.

You might want to look a bit more into the background of the person who writes these templates, by the way. She's a raving conspiracy theorist who posts some utter drivel and lies to Facebook, when she's not blocked - and last week she went full Holocaust-denial.

She can barely spell properly, never mind provide accurate, legally-sound template letters.

Smallereveryday · 22/09/2020 22:16

And what about if your son develops Covid and passes on to a teacher who has an underlying health condition.. who ends up in hospital.. illl for months , or GOD forbid , dead .. like my 42 yr old neighbour with 2 under 10s ???

That's ok then ! Because YOUR son doesn't like it !!

Unbelievably selfish .

LadyCatStark · 22/09/2020 22:18

But

  1. my son isn’t exempt
  2. it doesn’t sound like yours is either
  3. not all schools are encouraging the use of face masks
  4. DS barely notices he’s got one on now and is certainly not bothered about it
  5. doesn’t your son give a shit about his classmates and teachers? I’d be furious if he’s the one to test positive and everyone got sent home!
LadyCatStark · 22/09/2020 22:19

Oh and 6) why would “your solicitor” give a shit?

Enrico · 22/09/2020 22:23

Better call Saul 👌

1/10 op

FecktheBoss · 22/09/2020 22:29

You've made a bit of a tit of yourself.

At least the school staff will have had a much needed laugh. BTW did you send the letter to your solicitor?

FloreanFortescue · 22/09/2020 22:29

I was just wondering which might be the most batshit thread of 2020!

Look no further Hmm
