DD’s hair

DD is in primary school and as soon as I do her hair literally 5 minutes after it’s a mess! It’s falling down her face etc. I redo it and when I pick her up it’s again fallen half way across her face. What am I doing wrong? I’ve tried every pin, bobble and hair accessories out there. I feel very judged by other mums, their kids hair always seems to be in place. Any ideas on what I’m doing wrong and suggestions on easy hair styles for school please?

Could she use a headband to keep it out of her eyes?

Beautiful3 · 21/09/2020 21:46

My youngest has very fine hair. Ponytails and clips would literally slide out! I found that 2 pigtails worked well.

Some kids are just like it I'm afraid. My daughter goes in with tight braids and comes back out as stig of the dump

Pretty much what I was coming on to say!

My dd has thick, curly hair which is murder to be honest.

But still I endeavoured to have her neat and tidy for school. Never lasted more than a few mins as dd just wasn't that kinda kid!

We (the WHOLE family) have an "infamous" school photo of her, taken first thing that day, I'd sent her in perfectly neat and tidy with the wild curls tamed into 2 plaits, new cardigan (Cos shed already wrecked the other 2) etc...

In the photo

No cardigan
Tie at half mast
Smudge of mud on her cheek (god knows how she'd not been outside)
And only 1 plait still in place the other completely undone and the hair a total frizz explosion! Grin

I was so stressed and embarrassed at the time...now I love it!

It PERFECTLY embodies the child she was at that time, fun and carefree (tearing about getting into scrapes), generous (she'd given the elastic from her plait to a friend who was in tears as they'd lost theirs) and confident (HUGE cheesy grin in the pic)

And that's why it's the one pic the WHOLE family has!

Embrace it op, let them be a child it's such a short time when they're like this. Given their age would a little fringeless bob be the best option ? The trouble with fringes is they quickly grow and get in the eyes and require a lot of maintenance, or as pps say a long style but worn in a plait maybe a french plait?

My dd is now almost 20 and not only rarely seen with a hair out of place but also rarely seen make up free. She's beautiful but I wish she were more confident in herself and more like that carefree 7 year old now.

Another one for let it get abit dirty and go easy on the conditioner! or get the hairspray out.
I have hair exactly like this and so do both of my dds. Even when they grew it to bum length the front bits that should have stayed in a bobble didn't! We found cutting in a sweeping fringe and a couple Of layers helped give a bit of texture, still not brilliant but helps give a slightly tidier look.

DD went to school looking neat and cam home looking like she was dragged through the hedge backwards.

We found that a bob worked the best, no need to sort out hairbands, clips etc and mostly looking nice.

DD has thick and wavy hair but I have thin and absolutely straight. Normal shampoo and conditioner are poison for me and I have short hair since I am 12 and got fed up with slipping hairbands and trying to look neat.

I would try normal shampoos, no children ones as they are designed for making hair soft, the opposite your daughter needs. Dry shampoo may work, I would be vary about spray or mousse as it can dry out hair and makes it looking dull.

Personally I'd just get a good quality cut and don't worry if it's messy. I certainly wouldn't put hairspray or any other unnecessary lotions on a small kid'wuth delicate skin.

Who give a shit if other mothers make judgy faces at you? Says more about them than you OP.

Ullupullu · 21/09/2020 22:06

Give her a fringe? Get a haircut in any case so it doesn't need hairbands and fiddling with.

MynephewR · 21/09/2020 22:07

Have the same problem with my DD. What I do is tie the front section (what would be a fringe) back with a small hair tie and then tie it all up in a pony tail (front section included). This keeps it out if her eyes. The hair ties are both in the school colour and the pony tail one has a bow on it, it looks really nice. The pony tail has pretty much fallen out by the end of the day but I don't really care Grin

I can't use hair spray/gel because she has eczema and the wrong chemicals make it flare up. The eczema on her legs flares up if I put the wrong suncream on her face (and nowhere near her legs) so I don't want to risk it.

Leaannb · 21/09/2020 22:07

As person with fine hair the only way to go is with hairspray. Ot will keep ot in place

yecannyshoveyergranny · 21/09/2020 22:07

My hair is like your daughters. Try a wax spray or a sea salt spray. Hair spray never looks good on my hair, it's too fine, it looks like a helmet.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 21/09/2020 22:14

Pixie cut?

MyNameHasBeenTaken · 21/09/2020 22:50

Brush as normal and put a bobble in.
Then, take a wet length of string (cotton, natural fibres) and tie it above the bobble. Wrap it around the hair 3 or 4 times.
Tie in a tight knot and a pretty bow.
As the string dries, it shrinks slightly, making a tight grip

Whatwouldscullydo · 21/09/2020 23:26

Ha we just go with it. Shes made hedge drag chiq her thing.

I've lost far to many hair bands, slides, grips, to give a shit any more. Her hair is clean and its tied back when she gets to school. I cant help what happens next.

Family of sensitive skin people here so like hell am i coating her hair in crap ..if its gonna he a mess least it won't be a sticky mess.

CSIblonde · 21/09/2020 23:31

Bit of hair spray all over before you plait or ponytail. Then one quick spray all over after.Very fine hair is slippy & thin so bobbles, clips & grips slide out

chickenyhead · 22/09/2020 11:19

I don't use products on DD as she is only 7. But I did notice yesterday that she has cut a 1 inch square patch of her long straight fine hair, at the front, so short that it just stands up straight.

So we have exchanged stig for Adam ant.

Not sure how I will be able to erm "hide" that.

JoeCalFuckingZaghe · 22/09/2020 11:26

My hair is fine and thin and clips always slip out. Hairspray is your friend here and try washing as little as possible

chubbyhotchoc · 22/09/2020 11:54

I have it cut so it's as short as possible but still can be tied back. I do two pigtails with quite strong elastics. Just about looks ok
