Dentist - Oral Hygiene Education session

Just after people’s experience on this.

Has anyone been charged for the above?

It’s a 45 session to tell me how to look after my teeth and gums but they’re advising I take two sessions at a cost of £40s each.

I floss and brush daily but suffering from gingivitis. More so because I’m pre disposed to it - both parents have it and are slowly but surely losing their teeth.

At a previous appt they advised me to floss and how to brush which is what I’ve been working on.

At the moment I’ve got inflamed gums. Slightly receding gums but they haven’t receded much in a very long time.

I suppose I’m just a bit surprised at these two sessions and really wasn’t expecting them at all. I’ve never heard of anyone booking in for these.

I wonder if it’s a new thing because the last time I saw my dentist they didn’t mention these types of classes.

Your experience or advice would be helpful!

45 minute session! Not 45 session

I’m a dental hygienist - in the long run these appointments may well save your teeth, and therefore save you money.
Recession is usually caused by gum disease, which in turn is caused by your body having an inflammatory response to plaque in your mouth. If this isn’t removed thoroughly every day, from all surfaces of your teeth, it will eventually cause loss of the supporting bone and gum. If enough bone is lost, it can destabilise the tooth and cause the tooth itself to be lost.
These educational sessions are actually more important than professional cleaning, as what you do on a daily basis breaks this inflammatory cycle. How much and what type of daily cleaning is specific to each individual as we all have a different inflammatory response, different shaped jaws and teeth, dexterity and motivation. It takes a few sessions for some people, depending on these factors, but if you get it right it will save you money on prolonged dental scaling appointments, never mind the cost of tooth replacement in the future.

Perfectly summed up by MrsJoker. If you want to keep your teeth excellent oral hygiene is vital.

Wow given your very brief response I understand exactly why they provide the sessions.

I agree education is important. I thought I knew enough but I clearly don’t.

It also makes sense as to why those two appts are followed by hygienist appts.

You’ve explained that really well @MrsJoker so thank you.
