To use double buggy with almost 3 yo

Preschool is a good 10-15 min walk away. When my baby was born in April we decided to get a double buggy as we were doing lots of long walks during lockdown and my 2 year old kept asking to be carried.
Walked to pick DD up from preschool today and another mum made a comment to me about my double buggy. I said it’s been a life saver, I wasn’t sure if I’d use it much as she’s almost 3 so I bought it second hand but that I live on X road and it’s just that bit too far for her to walk so it’s been brilliant for preschool too. She also had a baby and replied by saying “my DD is 2 and a half and we live beyond your road and she walks” in a very judgemental way.
My DD is 3 next month would you say she was too old for the double and should be walking?

Yanbu. I kept mine until my eldest started school. By that point it mostly doubled up as a shopping and coat trolly but he still hopped in when he was 4yrs.

People love to judge, I really wouldn't worry about it yes your dc could walk but that could also take you 30-40 mins on a 15min journey what's the point. All my dc are roughly 2years apart I didn't use a double with the two eldest but I did with the two youngest. Do what makes your life easier and let Mrs snooty judge someone else

Wow. She sounds like an a**. All children are different. My daughter had to use a pushchair for long distances until 4+ as she couldn't walk that far (she does have hypermobility).

Not too old! A 10-15 minute walk is quite far for littles one particularly if you are rushing to pre school in the mornings or they are tired afterwards. Dd was a nightmare after pre school. Refused to walk most of time as she was too tired and we live only a few minutes away!!

Ignore her. If it makes your life easier and your son is happy who cares what others think?

namechangeinamillion · 21/09/2020 15:37

My son happily walked that distance and further at 3yo. Every child is different though and she was rude to comment.

I’ve hidden our buggy in the garage because our 3.5yr old would still insist on using it if he saw it. I have seriously considered getting it back out though because he still naps some afternoons and it makes picking his brother up from school awkward when he is too tired to walk nicely. My eldest had dropped his naps at an earlier age and was happy to walk longer distances. They’re all different, do what works for you.

I used one until my eldest was 4, probably nearer 5 than 4 tbh. We walked everywhere and I admit it was laziness on my part. I couldn't be bothered at the end of a long afternoon at the park having to persuade them to walk home. If I hadn't had the pushchair to stick them both in I would probably have gone by car.
Also it took 15 minutes to walk to nursery at my speed, more like 45 at their speed, stopping to look at every worm or jump in every puddle. Again if I hadn't used the pushchair I would have gone in the car. What's the difference for the kids? None.

Do what suits you op. If she's still wanting to sit in it when she's 15 then you might have a problem though

GrasswillbeGreener · 21/09/2020 15:55

We live on a fairly steep hill. Most years I will see someone using a pushchair to help get a 4 year old to and from school and my thoughts are generally along the lines of how tired little kids can get when just starting school.

We used a nursery near the top of the hill. 5 minutes' walk tops. When my daughter was nearly 4 she had a serious illness. After recovering from it sufficiently to go back to nursery, she needed the pushchair for another couple of months.

Self righteous cow.

You do what's easiest for you and that sounds much easier than the alternative!

15 minute walk with a 3 year old turns into 30 minute walk. Add in shitty weather, NO THANK YOU Wink

Buggy until it's too heavy to push ime...
*arms like a wrestler from years and years of double buggies...

MNers like to come on these threads and say you should tip them out of buggies at 18 months but the reality is having a baby and a 3 year old is difficult and buggies help a lot. To each their own!

notdaddycool · 21/09/2020 16:23

I think we got rid of the double at 3 and a bit but added a buggy board to the single we still had. Kept the double running buggy to past 5 so occasionally used that too. Whatever suits your circumstances.

Wobbitcatcher · 21/09/2020 16:30

My son is 2yr 9 months and I’m 38 weeks I’ve just bought a 2nd hand double because my son cannot be trusted to hold hands and walk the direction I want to go in!
He can walk plenty far enough but only in his chosen direction and I that’s not good if we have places to be!
Even if I only use it a few time’s I’ll sell it after and won’t have cost me much per use.
I think it’s sensible Grin

PablosHoney · 21/09/2020 16:32

Ignore her, it’s good exercise for you 😋

SaffieSoph · 21/09/2020 17:06

I’m in a similar situation with two under 3 (oldest nearly 3) and I love my double buggy! I use it all the time! I know mums with older children who still use a buggy for longer walks. Ignore her, do whatever makes your life easy!

Japa · 21/09/2020 17:20

We used a buggy to bring our child home from school when they were in Reception. He was exhausted at the end of the day and it was a 30 minute walk.

Don't worry what other people say. Do what works for you.
