To peg out day old washing (damp smell!)

I found laundry in the machine this morning from yesterday (or Saturday?!) I honestly don't remember when I put it in. It smells a bit damp but not overly so, but then DH always seems to smell it more.

Sometimes pegging out slightly damp smelling washing gets rid of the smell but I think I'm kidding myself today.

Also sometimes washing doesn't get rid of the smell?!

I'm sure Mumsnet has the answers!

I personally would rewash and hang out to dry. Bi carb removes smells if you worried about it still smelling after. You can add some in the drawer or drum

No you need to re wash.... If it was the tiniest bit of smell and the height of summer (so lots of sun and UV rays) I might think hanging would help..... But at this time of year def another full wash.

If you have any white vinegar add this to the softener drawer with some essential oil (if you have it) which will help get rid of the smell, then peg out as soon as its done.

I wouldn’t wear it if it smells. Can you put it through a fast wash?

RobertaTheGreat · 21/09/2020 09:14

Annoying but the simplest thing is to rewash. I hate that musty smell!

Waveysnail · 21/09/2020 09:15

Rewash

redlockscelt · 21/09/2020 09:15

I would wash it again unless I can line dry and freshen it up that way but I'd really rather wash it again.

Scweltish · 21/09/2020 09:16

Defo need to rewash. I’ve tried pegging it out to get rid of the smell, they’re always still a bit musty tho

MrsClatterbuck · 21/09/2020 09:17

If washing is still in my machine and hasn't been put out to dry I put it on a rinse cycle with some fabric conditioner. Mine is only 31 mins. Even if it didn't smell I would do it as the clothes would be really creased and I prefer to hang them out as soon as I can after the wash has finished.

ChelseaDaggers · 21/09/2020 09:18

I'd also wash again. If it's really awful, peg it out, then wash again or use bicarb. Although I've had limited success with bicarb for removing smells.

ATowelAndAPotato · 21/09/2020 09:20

Pop it back in on a quick rinse cycle with some white vinegar/laundry detergent if you have any, or fabric softener then peg out on the line. I don’t think the sun is strong enough now to kill off the pong!!

I went away for the weekend on Friday, leaving a wash running for my DP to take out. I come home Sunday to find he took it out and left it wet in the washing basket as ‘the holes are designed to let the air circulate so it can sit there for a few days’.
Irritated doesn’t cover it.........

TheYeaSayer · 21/09/2020 09:29

Just put it through your quick wash programme, FGS!

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 21/09/2020 09:30

Dh would not rewash and it would really annoy me because I would notice the smell.

AriettyHomily · 21/09/2020 09:32

Urgh I can't stand that smell. Wash it, chuck in some bicarb or white vinegar if neccessary.

BunnyLovesBananas · 21/09/2020 10:06

Re-wash it is!

I don't think a quick wash will cut though, will it? Well I mean it will take an hour unless I'm missing something. Samsung machine.

Interesting to know bicarb helps, thank you.

I wondered whether vinegar helps as I do use that sometimes anyway as have pet blankets to wash plus I've heard it's good as a softener but I haven't really seen evidence of that...
