To give him antibiotics

My DS was bitten by another child today. It was a deep bite, which left defined teeth marks and very slightly broke the skin in two places.
I wasn’t able to clean it immediately as we were in the park.
Afterwards I checked NHS direct and it said “If the bite has broken the skin, you should seek immediate medical attention after cleaning the wound”.
Called 111 and spoke to a GP. They prescribed antibiotics for 7 days.
Thing is, my DS is only 2 and has had antibiotics several times. Mostly for infected eczema but also for an oral injury, which was a preventative measure. I’m worried about him building up a tolerance or them becoming ineffective in the event that he ever had a serious infection.

So my AIBU is:
YABU - the doctor has prescribed them for a reason, give them to him
YANBU - my child has been bitten before and was fine without them

The doctor knows better than MN. Trust your doctor.

Honestly, I think you've already had actual medical advice. I'd trust that more than some internet randoms.
Hope he's ok.

ChelseaCat · 20/09/2020 20:35

You’re right to be cautious about antibiotic use but definitely trust the doctor. Bites are nasty!

Cookerhood · 20/09/2020 20:36

Humans can build up resistance to antibiotics. Bacteria on the other hand...

Marmite27 · 20/09/2020 20:37

Follow the medical advice.

Human bites can be worse than animal bites for bacteria so in this instance, yes I would give the ABs

Hebitmyboy · 20/09/2020 20:41

This is actually reassuring. I’ve never had one of my DC bitten before and I felt with hindsight I panicked slightly. I am worried about him having too many antibiotics but it’s a deep bite and big.

Yes definitely give the medication, your poor DC hope it’s not too sore

Daphnise · 20/09/2020 20:46

Does the child go to the doctor a lot?

Either way you've had medical advice so why not follow it.

(BTW a deep bite that showed teeth marks but barely broke the skin.....?)

Antibiotic resistance is more a worry if it was multiple times in a year and for infections that they wouldn't work for. I had a course every year for 12 years with chest infections as a child and I ve never had any negative effects from it. Bites sound nasty so if the doctor recommended it, I think it's better to be safe and take it.

That’s not how it works. Humans don’t become resistant, bacteria do.

Even if you’ve never had antibiotics before, if you catch a resistant strain, they won’t work. Vice versa, if you’ve had every antibiotic going several times, if your infection is due to non resistant bacteria, the ab’s will work effectively.

Follow advice on dosage, finishing the course etc. The guidance is to reduce the chances of the bacteria developing resistance.

@Daphnise yes so there were a couple of tiny specks of blood at the time but then it stopped and now looks like bruising under the skin.
