Need to stop smoking!!

Hi sorry for posting here but I never seem to get many responses when I post on other boards.

I desperately need to stop smoking. I have a constant sore swollen throat, sore chest and can barely breathe...I'm 24 Confused

For those of you who have successfully stopped smoking, how long did it take for the above symptoms to go away?

I'm thinking of quitting cold Turkey, is this the easiest way to stop for good?

Thanks for reading Grin

I quit randomly on a Thursday afternoon. I just decided that I would have my 'journey-home-car' cigarette 'later'. And kept deferring when I would have my next one etc etc.

I googled a quitting timeline which shows you when your blood pressure will return to normal, when your risk for certain diseases decreases etc. I found that really motivational.

I stopped cold turkey about 10 years ago after trying lots of other ways. I was in a SHIT mood for some time but go through it. You will start to feel the benefits, drink plenty of water and make sure you eat healthy food, exercise and also take time to chill out.

@Oysterbabe I think a customer at work told me about that book, is it the one were you smoke loads while you're reading it and then by the end you hate cigs? I've tried the gum but it made me throw up, and an inhaler thing that smelt like fish Confused my sons just turned 8 and keeps on at me to stop smoking, I told him I would for my birthday which is Thursday and I really don't want to let him down. I guess cold turkeys going to be my next plan of action...bring on the cough Sad

I think you need to accept its not easy but you can do it. Think of the alternative...

@MinnieJackson and @Ynwa1234, For me the side effects were negligible like weird dreams, acting a little "off" according to some and the doctors are advised not to proscribe if you are on antidepressants. I just balanced it out and decided it was totally worth it. I stopped smoking on the 8th day of taking the medication - which was exactly what it said I would do. I still cannot get over how easy it was.
Do your research though and I think that the reason some people buy them online (I wouldn't do this) is because their doctor may have been a bit sniffy or reluctant because of their medical history.

I tried lots of things, I was a heavy smoker and loved smoking (which I think is the biggest battle). I didn’t go down the Champix route because I knew a couple of people that suffered hideous side effects with depression/suicidal thoughts but vaping did work for me and very well. Five years on and I still vape but didn’t touch cigarettes at all for the first couple of years and didn’t want to. I do occasionally have a roll up if I’m drinking but it never makes me want to start smoking again because it tastes so dirty and the smell!

If you do choose to vape you need to go to a decent proper vape store. Do not get a cheap shitty one from a newsagent or supermarket. Get a decent, powerful one and talk to them about your requirements. There are two main types of vape juice - vegetable glycerol and petroleum glycerol. The PG gives more of a throat hit but I think a dirtier taste and made my stomach ache but the VG is MUCH nicer and gives decent clouds. It was the action for me so I like the cloudy type. Good luck.

Many years ago I had quite a severe head injury and simply forgot I smoked 😅 I wouldn't recommend that way of giving up though lol

I stupidly started again and finally gave up using Champix 12 years ago. The side effects were brutal but I was able to tell myself 'its just the tablets it will stop' but I did end up stopping the tablets 2 weeks early. However I've never wanted a cigarette since, people can smoke around me and I'm not bothered. Its lovely being able to breathe again and not hack my guts up every morning coughing, it certainly didn't take long to feel the effects of stopping.

Unfortunately I gave up one addiction for another, now I just need a magic tablet to stop me wanting food. So watch out for that.

Good luck its totally worth it

SmellsLikeFeet · 21/09/2020 10:48

No advice, but good luck
When my friend gave up she bought herself something nice every month, something that she previously couldn't afford. Obviously you can't do this forever but that maybe a visual incentive or you could buy something for your son to put away for Christmas

I'm day 3. Cold turkey.
I just keep reminding myself that if I have one now then all these hours without one have been a complete waste of time and I'll have to start over.
I'm incredibly proud of myself.

Have you got a One You service near you? If you happen to be East Sussex then One You East Sussex are brilliant, free and will give you nicotine replacement therapy for free.

Yes you can, if really opens your eyes on why you are smoking, how it works etc

Worked for me brilliantly once, but sadly I went back. Nowadays there are so many fewer places you can smoke or people that smoke I think I'd have been able to stay off.

Well tomorrow afternoon it will be 7 days.

I am still finding the want of them quite strong and still several times a day (yesterday was very hard) but the fact Iv put myself through this bad feeling has made me more determined to not fuck it up now because it feels stupid to put myself through this for a week to just go back to square one again but this time knowing I'll have to do it and feel like this all over again when I try again!

but it mostly it's getting easier and feels like I could actually do this if I just dig my heels in and don't give in now I can see that this time next week and this time next month will feel much more like not smoking is my normal rather than now which is the opposite.

Honestly @GotOutOfBedOnTheWrongSide

The worst part is the bit you are in and that is the making the decision of when! it took me months of swaying about it and saying I'm going to then at the last minute buying another packet and saying to myself soon. I wish I'd just months ago just gone fuck it This is my last 20 and then just not bought any more! It would have saved months of head space and I'd be 6 or more months extra as a non smoker.

Just to confirm, the reason I bought mine online is because my go wouldn't prescribe as he says it it meant to go through the stop smoking service. They don't have evening or weekend appointments so I got a prescription from an online pharmacy. It wasn't just ordering it from amazon.

@MinnieJackson Iv just read your post about your promise to your son so I thought you would also benefit from my post.

It's hard but I am getting there and I actually do feel confident that I'm going to succeed.
