To hate the word “sniffles”

It gives me the rage and is a silly, belittling term for a cold.

People have colds, they are a thing. Sometimes they have mild colds and sometimes bad colds.

Why are mild colds being replaced with the stupid irritating word “sniffles” and bad colds referred to as “flu” when they are colds.

And if you have a runny nose without a cold (ie allergies), you have a runny nose and are sniffing (no “l”) when you should be blowing your nose.

Does sniffles give anyone else the rage?

(no. I looked up sniffle vs sniff and the Internet and it says sniffle relates to runny nose and sniff to smelling things, but no one I know has ever used the word sniffle instead of sniff. It’s always been “stop sniffing and blow your nose!” If you said “stop sniffling” it sounds weird and almost like “stop snivelling” which has a different meaning again.)

End of my rant!

No one is unreasonable to hate a word. They are being unreasonable if they expect everybody else not to use the word.

I have a sister who seeks to try and control what words I use, based on her inconsistent and incoherent (and vehement to the point of threatening physical violence because she's pissed) whims. And wonders why I refuse to talk to her now. I really can't be bothered with that bullshit.

I have an aunt who insists that nobody use the word "gravy" in her presence, so at family meals we would ask each other to pass the sauce.

mbosnz · 20/09/2020 19:31

I fear I would be saying 'gravy' without meaning to, far more often than I ought.

It's like being told not to think about elephants. . .

Posh hot chocolate must be one with squirty cream, mini marshmallows and chocolate sprinkles. Served in a cup and saucer with a mini biscuit on the side. From M&S.

Grin

And I insist on banning the use of the word sniffles by everyone in the world. No one I know in real life uses the word. I’d probably de-friend them if they did. They probably write in Comic Sans too whilst snuggled up with a hot choccy and feeling poorly.

Or start singing the alternative lyrics to The Angel Gabriel from Heaven came..

“Most Highly Flavoured Gravy. ..”
