Have I done the right thing - booking a covid test.

So I have booked a test for my DS aged 10. He is very well and happy, eating well in himself but he's had a heavy cold for the last week. I know a cold in itself doesn't warrant a test.. but..

The cold has been strange. Not seen much actual snot but he's been suffering from severe congestion for the last 10 days. Again probably just a cold, more tired etc. No fever though! Well the first day I had one reading of 38 but it soon went down. 37.5 is his normal so 38 isn't overly high for him.

But since this Friday night he's been coughing. The cough itself isn't continuous as in it's happening all day long but he keeps randomly coughing here and there. It started off as a wet cough but now sounds more dry. Quite loud like a hacking cough.

Again, I'm sure this is just the tail end of a cold but I'm concerned as his cold has lasted 10 days which is unusual for him now the cough.

So yeah. Aibu to have booked a test?? Can't help think I'm wasting resources if it's just a cold. He's been off school all week with the cold!!

Also questions about the test. Says I need to take photo id for person taking the test. He does not have any Id? Do you need Id for a child?

Also I read somewhere you need to blow your nose. He cannot blow his nose but he's congested but there doesn't seem to be much snot in his nose.. sorry tmi. Should I be concerned?

there's research that identify more symptoms than on the NHS list, but the common cold isn't one of them, especially ten days on.

But never mind if you've deprived a care home worker of a test.

TheTrollFairy · 20/09/2020 10:28

You are doing the right thing. The cough is new so you can only go by the symptoms that now fit. You should have the test back by tomorrow afternoon (if you are driving through) but it can take up to 48 hours so it’s likely he’ll miss up to 2 days next week.
I would deffo bring another adult with you if you can and also make sure you have something as a treat for after the test, they aren’t comfortable to do and you have to do it accurately or you’ll get either a false reading or an inconclusive test result

The government should have known that when schools go back the demand would go up as a school/teacher won’t risk a cough regardless of if it’s the result of a cold or not. Most colds lead to a hacking wet or dry cough, I’m no expert but I knew once schools go back then testing will need to go up in order to make sure kids are missing the least amount of time possible

It’s a tough call.
A fine line and different people would do different things.

Personally in the circumstances you describe I wouldn’t book a test.
But who knows really.

You are damned if you do and damned if you don't.

DS brought home a cold last week, he has NO symptoms of Covid-19 and ALL the symptoms of it just being a cold. He spent two days off school as he felt rough then I sent him back in as he felt well but had a cough. I called the school for advice and they were happy with this approach but you would have thought I had unleashed the devil himself on the school by the other parents reactions. They have since sent an email clarifying that if pupils have the sham proms of a common cold they do not need to isolate,

A work colleague did try to book a test for her son and there were none to be had for over 200 miles. She eventually got one in Cardiff and had to bundle her lad into the car in the early hours and pray he didn't need to use the services at all so she could keep him away from other people.

The system is broken. Massively broken.

LadyFlumpalot · 20/09/2020 10:33

Sham proms?!? Symptoms!

jb2941 · 20/09/2020 10:38

For everyone saying I shouldn't have. What should I have done instead? Sent him to school with a hacking cough, he's sent home and then what? Isolating for 2 weeks and having a child with sen miss 2 more weeks when he's already missed 1? Or getting him a test so hopefully he can go back.

There are children in his bubble with symptoms so it's not like he couldn't have it. Also there's been a case linked to Oh's work..

He has a cough.. a new cough which continues throughout the day!

What if he had a cold and covid? What if he caught a cold then covid on top of it?? Last time he went out was last Friday...

What if he had covid and presented as nasal congestion? (I know this isn't one of the signs but I've read online that some people have congestion and tested positive). Other countries have listed it as a symptom?

Why bother asking then?
Cornettoninja · 20/09/2020 10:46

@jb2941 exactly, it’s a really fine line parents are walking at the moment. Testing gives you a positive or a negative (fingers crossed for the latter) and that information means you can make the best decision.

I hate this blaming people for getting tests. There is literally no other way to tell if you have COVID or something else. The failures here aren’t at the publics door and people need to keep doing the right thing (even if they fail to get hold of a test) because that’s the part we should be playing.

wetwiped · 20/09/2020 10:46

OP you have done the right thing for the right reasons, in line with latest guidelines. The cough could be Covid without a test you will never know. Testing being a shambles is causing the chaos, not people following advice given.

jb2941 · 20/09/2020 10:47

Thanks all. I am grateful I could get a test this morning. Must of been very lucky. Tbf we aren't in an area with many cases. Nearest testing site is about 25 miles away so grateful we got one there by some form of a miracle 🤣
