To think people are dreaming up prices on Gumtree, Schpock, eBay etc.

Have been looking for a decent (ish) second hand sofa on all above mentioned sites for our family static caravan for a few weeks and can't believe the kinds of prices people are advertising. There was one in particular I looked at she wanted £650 for and ad read "only 4 years old plenty of life left in cushions" fair enough, but then she had pictures of it in the showroom she bought it from with price tag on of £800. I just can't believe people are really asking hundreds of £s for shagged out sofas lol. Know something's are only worth what someone else is willing to pay but just think some people are definitely dreaming Grin

Prices for all kinds of things are through the roof at the mo. You could probably get £500 for a half used tin of garden fence paint right now and it's name-your-price on bikes!

Try charity shops, there's loads that sell furniture now

chunkyrun · 19/09/2020 19:08

I picked up a leather sofa and footstool for £10 recently. Maybe look around charity shops might have better luck

Yanbu. I know everyone will say "nobody's making you buy it" etc. But, yes, I agree with you.

I have bought and sold so much secondhand stuff, from my wedding dress to a pushchair, to clothes and furniture. There are some ridiculous prices on all of them! I remember seeing secondhand wedding dresses for £600ish. Those had been worn to a wedding, which means they probably had to have been altered to fit the first owner. Why would anyone want that for that price? Also once got a sofa for a few hundred quid. It looked great online, dh went to see it in person. Bought it, brought it home and then it started to seep out cigarette smoke smell. I couldn't smell it to begin with, but overnight it began to properly stink. The scumbag owner swore blind it was a smoke free home etc and got really aggressive when we questioned that. Annoyingly we just wanted rid of the smelly thing stinking out our house, so we gave it away and bought a new new one.

I agree.

It's the same with clothes on ebay. You see mediocre stuff listed for silly prices, and no one every bids on them, the buyer just continues to relist it every week.
I mean, what's the point?

ReturnofSaturn · 19/09/2020 19:12

*the seller

British Heart Foundation have furniture stores in many towns and cities. They usually have some great quality pieces.

Sparklesocks · 19/09/2020 19:17

I think the issue is some people just have no idea. I know things are worth what someone will pay for them but I think some sellers forget second hand stuff is never going to be worth as much as brand new, even if they’ve only had it a short time.

Get thee on Freecycle and Freegle, there are always settees going.

BalanceGreen · 19/09/2020 19:23

I know what you mean and would second BHF furniture shops for sofas: Three pretty nice matching sofa sets in our local today for under £200.

The worst are people who sell their unwanted pets and try to make a profit on it. No, your hamster you bought for £15 and its cage you bought for £25 are not worth £50, but some kind person will pay that out of pity for the animal so the cycle goes on.

Facebook market place and free local facebook pages usually have fantastic giveaways on them ive decked out most of my flat from them. But i agree spock and gumtree are basically people asking near full price for old shit.

MyOwnSummer · 19/09/2020 19:40

There are always tons of sofas on our local fb selling pages for practically nothing. The downside is having a big enough vehicle to collect it. But then to be fair, many are old or in a less popular style so cheap makes sense.

espressodepresso · 19/09/2020 19:49

If you look in the "freebies" or "under £ " section of Gumtree, you can find good deals! I managed to buy a free corner sofa in v good condition, all I had to do was arrange a £40 van collection and we were set!
