Would you travel within the UK

It's my 50th next weekend and I was hoping to have a weekend away but have put off planning anything because of the Virus situation.

I'm in N.Ireland and had been hoping to go over to Newcastle or Manchester but the rates there seem to be very high.

So would you travel at the moment?
If so, I'm looking for suggestions for cities with low rates at the moment.

Have tried searching but council areas are confusing.

The areas I would most like to travel to are Manchester
Birmingham
London
Newcastle
Glasgow
Edinburgh

I would travel within the mainland as I can use my car, but I wouldn’t travel from NI.

ShellsAndSunrises · 19/09/2020 10:01

If I’m honest, probably not right now... just because it seems highly likely that we’re going to be on some sort of restrictions; and most of the places on your list are high risk. Birmingham and surrounding areas are on local lockdown, and rates went up again this week. Khan has warned he wants to put measures in in London.... I think Manchester and Newcastle are still under measures, too, although I’m not close to those so I’m not sure.

Happy 50th for next weekend! Flowers

Livelovebehappy · 19/09/2020 10:02

I would if on the mainland by booking on a booking system where you have free cancellation up til the day you’re booked in for, in case covid restrictions change. If I had to pay for flights or ferries I wouldn’t, only because if they cancel or change it’s a PITA to get refunds.

kitnkaboodle · 19/09/2020 10:05

Personally, I wouldn't as things are on a knife edge right now. Just reading in the paper that there will probably be new, possible national restrictions announced on Tuesday (England). So this time next week things might be very different to how they are now. I'd stay at home and try to do something special there.

cakecakecheese · 19/09/2020 10:05

I think I'd save visiting those sort of places until things are better. Is there somewhere nice nearer to you that you can go to?

I'm 40 in November, I was supposed to be going to Las Vegas, I live in Essex so am looking at a cottage or lodge somewhere not too far like Norfolk.

LakieLady · 19/09/2020 10:07

We've got a cottage in Suffolk booked for a week from next Saturday.

I'm not feeling hopeful. Sad

movingonup20 · 19/09/2020 10:15

Bristol maybe, think there's a direct flight.

Viv0321 · 19/09/2020 10:23

I’m wondering the same.

Shoxfordian · 19/09/2020 10:44

We're going to Brighton for a few days next week
Hoping it will be alright

yeOldeTrout · 19/09/2020 11:11

cAn you go to Dublin instead? (sorry for any ignorance)

SoloMummy · 19/09/2020 12:49

What about to Southern Ireland? Failing that, tbh no I wouldn't....

Waxonwaxoff0 · 19/09/2020 12:52

For sure, I travelled to London on the train recently. Off peak, DS and I were the only ones in the carriage. Stayed in a hotel, went to Hyde park and ate out, it was lovely to have a break.

noenergy · 19/09/2020 13:35

Not really a fan of Southern Ireland.

I might risk London if I can find cheap flights, otherwise I will just be patient and hope the cases start to fall and wait until half term.

I live in North East England (but originally from N.Ireland) and we are under tighter restrictions. Pubs have to close at 10pm etc I wouldn't come here at the moment

MrsMaglev · 19/09/2020 13:47

OP I think I read somewhere announcements are coming Tuesday on additional measures, could you wait until then to book?

I think it's highly likely London will be seeing measures in the next week or so but depending on what you want to do that might not bother you...

WilsonMilson · 19/09/2020 13:54

I’m in NI too.

I might take the car on the ferry to Scotland - you can sit out on deck during the day so less risk, but I wouldn’t be flying or going to any of the English destinations you’ve mentioned.

We were going to be going over on the ferry late October to visit family for a week, but with the rise in cases I can’t see it happening now.

The Manor House in Enniskillen is nice for a break, or what about somewhere in Donegal?

Happy Birthday! Flowers

MsVestibule · 19/09/2020 13:58

I'm not booking any holidays, either in the UK or abroad. We went to Scotland in the English summer holidays but there were just too many restrictions that meant we didn't enjoy it as much as we normally do. As restrictions are getting tighter again, I'd just rather save my money and go when we can get full enjoyment out of it. Maybe in 2023 🙄.

Ghostlyglow · 19/09/2020 14:36

I've been to London a couple of times in the last few weeks. It was quiet, and lots of pubs/restaurants seem to be closing early during the week, but it was lovely to just be somewhere else Smile.

snowone · 19/09/2020 14:38

I wouldn't go anywhere that involved going on a flight.....could you not get the boat over to Scotland??

FrankRattlesnake · 19/09/2020 14:46

We went to n Ireland over the summer. We normally fly but chose to drive via Liverpool. Did the overnight ferry (get cabin tickets at check in), straight on, straight to cabin got up , straight to car and off. Interaction was limited, super safe and clean and then drove to my family. We did the overnight ferry as didn’t want to spend 8 hours in a lounge area.

Personally I don’t want to go through airports at the moment so the ferry was the safest option. Liverpool is a wonderful city, really vibrant, great hotels, lots to see and do but would I want a city break there right now? Probably not, even though they had some good things in place to promote social distancing.

Maybe wait until things are a little more settled? Or go to one of the amazing spas over there?? There is also centre parks in s Ireland But not really comparable to a city break!

RemyHadley · 19/09/2020 15:00

We’re off on holiday next week (unless it becomes illegal obviously), but that’s driving to a nice holiday house. Won’t be mixing with anybody else really, so don’t think it’s higher risk than staying home.

I wouldn’t make plans to use public transport, stay in a hotel or expect to be eating out at the moment tbh.

Emma1962 · 19/09/2020 19:06

I would maybe rent an air bnb/cottage somewhere rural for a weekend & do nice walks/take away & relax in a different environment but I don’t think I’d travel too far or head to a city

Viv0321 · 19/09/2020 19:12

What do people think about caravan parks?

FatimaLovesBread · 19/09/2020 19:17

We're going away Weds to Manchester, Edinburgh and Newcastle. All driven. Not sure if will happen though, hopefully
