I get throat tightness and choke when I eat. This started yesterday and been like this the whole day today. It goes away after a time after eating. I can't eat , afraid it will happen again.

With any kind of food at all?

GoldfishParade · 18/09/2020 23:53

Could it be psychological? I have similar symptoms as part of my anxiety. Its called phagophobia. How is your physical and mental health otherwise?

Notimeforaname · 18/09/2020 23:54

What about trying mash or soup for a bit? It could have been just anything that set it off, a once off thing but now the anxiety of it may be making your throat tighten more?

Suzi7979 · 18/09/2020 23:58

It has happened twice with sandwich (toast) and I was struggling to swallow my medication now.

I have had anxiety earlier this year but been great the last month. This throat tightness and choking started suddenly yesterday evening. I had breakfast was ok, then sandwich for lunch and the same thing happened. I am also burping a lot, I don't know if that is relevant.

No idea what might be wrong, but I think you'd not be going overboard to phone 111 and get medical advice.

It sounds like somethings not right, hope you can get it sorted nice and easy.

sleepylittlebunnies · 19/09/2020 00:12

Could it be oesophagitis?

GoldfishParade · 19/09/2020 00:12

You might not get many replies on AIBU, so you could also try posting in the general health and mental health sections.

All I can say is that mine is a symptom of my anxiety, it happened once, it stuck in my mind, like you I developed a kind of preemptive fear and it turns into a bit of a cycle. Like you bread and especially sandwiches seem to be particularly difficult which is interesting.

Having said that, that is just my experience- and you say you have had anxiety so it could fit. However, maybe it could be a physical issue, so try and get a few more replies from people, and also make an appointment to see your GP to discuss it.

Suzi7979 · 19/09/2020 00:24

I will try and call 111 tomorrow if it happens again.

I think the first episode scared me and maybe started this cycle. If it doesn't improve it might also be something physical.

I get this if I haven’t ad breakfast and go straight to lunch which is normally a sandwich. It’d s horrible feeling. I’ve had it for about five years, but it comes and goes. It could be anxiety related. Not sure.

Suzi7979 · 19/09/2020 00:30

I had my breakfast (oat) and then a sandwich for lunch. I had dinner ( lasagne) was fine then couldn't even swallow my medication.

This has happened twice while eating sandwich.

I also forgot to add that I get a burning sensation in my tongue also.

This sounds like an allergic reaction especially with the burning tongue.

Does the timings coincide with your medication you mentioned? Is it a new meds?

Suzi7979 · 19/09/2020 01:03

No I have been on the medication for 3 years. I am also thinking if it could be some kind of allergy.

OP posts:
BashfulClam · 19/09/2020 01:14

I get this and it’s due to reflux. The burning could be acid, food gets kind of ‘stuck’ with me. I take medication for reflux and it helps. Bread is the worst for this with me and red meat.

Suzi7979 · 19/09/2020 02:10

I have Gaviscon, would try and see if that helps . The burping makes reflux a possibility

It does sound like it could be a gastric problem rather than a psychological one.

IME oesophagitis hurts inside your chest, and the pain can spread up and down. When I have a severe episode I feel like I cannot swallow, but I can. Drinking ice-cold water helps. Eases the pain and seems to reset the rebellious sensation in my throat.

My throat actually rebelling and refusing to swallow sometimes happens when I'm coming down with a D&V bug, which also matches up with burping. Nasty, eggy burps usually.

Hope you feel better today.
