To just move to another country? Advice

travelfaraway · 18/09/2020 17:39

Posting here for traffic!
Me and DP are mid 20's and have a young DC.. We are hoping to sell our house soon and we think it will make a good profit!
Me and DP have never really travelled. It's something we are both interested in but feel we will never have the chance, however Ive started to get this idea in my head that once we sell the house why not move to either New Zealand or Australia for upto a year.. We both hate our jobs, I'd happily do any job for a year to get by so we can explore another country with our DC before they are school age and we could just rent for a year and then buy a house once we are back.
Would this be a silly thing to do? I feel excited even at the thought of doing this as I've never felt that it would be an option for us until now!
Has anyone else here done this? What would we have to do in order to achieve this? What is your advice ?!

You really need to be researching which visas you think you can enter another country on to reside In. You will be very unlikely to get visas which will allow you to work....and with kids you won’t be able to do the classic backpacker route of working on farms and staying in hostels.

Check out www.britishexpats.com and look up the forums section for visas.

BritneyS · 18/09/2020 17:54

I think Australia will give under 30s a years working visa quite happily?

Frazzled2207 · 18/09/2020 17:58

Australia certainly used to give working holiday visas up to age 30 fairly readily.
However I don’t think moving to any other country is viable just now. Fairly sure the only people that can fly into oz are Australians.

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 18/09/2020 18:27

Oh gosh just do it op! I so so wish I'd gone when I was younger. Definitely do your research as to where is the best for you but I would do it.

ScribblingMilly · 18/09/2020 18:36

It's not a stupid thing to do at all - absolutely do it. You will not be missing anything here!

mbosnz · 18/09/2020 18:39

If you can do it, (I'm not sure how realistic Australia or NZ are for the next few years, quite frankly), go for it.

However, be aware that both countries are expensive to live in, and that you're stepping off the real estate ladder - and that it's very easy to run through your mortgage deposit for your next property.

travelfaraway · 18/09/2020 18:49

Obviously this would only even be possible as long as everything has settled with covid and if we could travel there. I don't know where else I'd like to travel to other than them two places! I just don't want to look back in life and really regret not doing this. I just haven't a clue what the steps are in even living in another country. Only other issue is convincing DP to do this with me, I've mentioned it in passing to him before but never had a proper conversation with him yet!

Have you ever been to Australia or New Zealand.

If not then post covid perhaps you should have 2 weeks holiday out there to get a feel for the place and explore what's on offer.

maddy68 · 18/09/2020 19:02

Definitely leave the UK. It's a cess pit. I left last year do r a different country. Best thing I did.

Embracelife · 18/09/2020 19:06

Arnoldthecat · 18/09/2020 19:13

Get out of the UK while you can.

MarshaBradyo · 18/09/2020 19:14

If you get a visa for a year won’t it be hard to come back?

You’ll have to rent or try to buy anew

travelfaraway · 18/09/2020 19:25

@Embracelife
Hoping around 70k I definitely think it's do-able with that amount and to keep a decent amount aside for when we come back! I would want us to work over there and use our income mainly whilst living there!

I left the UK for Canada, initially on a UK basis but made permanent following the Brexit vote.

Much happier here and the future feels less bleak. I'm fairly outdoorsy and the local countryside is just incredible.

Fairly easy to immigrate here on a 2 year visa for under 30s.

onetwothreeadventure · 18/09/2020 19:42

We’ve done a few family gap years and 6 months plus maternity leave travel. No regrets and so many happy memories although I’m sure my career suffered a little as a result. I haven’t stayed in one place for more than a month so you’re experience will probably be different but the biggest challenges were when kids got sick and not having a support network for babysitting etc.

Take the chances while you can

BeaverTail · 18/09/2020 19:42

initially on a temporary* basis...

RichPetunia · 18/09/2020 19:46

Perhaps think about renting out your house while you travel? I know someone who did exactly as you did, but couldn’t move back to the area they’d lived in as they were out priced due to the increase in house prices. They had to buy in a cheaper area, quite far away from where they wanted. They don’t regret going abroad, but they do regret selling up rather than renting out.

Muma11 · 18/09/2020 19:50

Unfortunately it’s not that easy to just get a visa which includes work rights. We are currently in the process of getting a work visa for Australia, your job will have to be on the skilled shortage list for a start, then provide approx 8 years evidence. We are about 4 months in and will cost about £10k, for a work holiday visa you need to be 31 or under with no dependants. Good luck though great idea to do!

Annasgirl · 18/09/2020 19:51

I think this is a great idea OP, but I think you should broaden your horizons - what about South America or Africa or Asia - I just think that Australia and NZ are off the agenda for people for the next 2 years unless you are a citizen.

Gobbycop · 18/09/2020 19:56

Do it honestly.

I'm firmly in the camp of better to regret something you have done blah.

Worst case scenario is you come home, not a bad worst case is it.

AdoptedBumpkin · 18/09/2020 20:04

Not wanting to put you off but if you do go, it might be a big wrench to come back and you may not have the option of staying.

Kaiserin · 18/09/2020 20:12

You need to seriously research visas and health insurance.
I'll be honest: with a young DC, what you suggest sounds very difficult.
Also your lack of travelling experience is a problem.
Try a holiday first, between 2 weeks and a month.
