Réadmission for weight loss and now back home

We were readmitted for 12.7% weight loss and now back home last couple of days. We left and my little one was only 7.8% weight loss which is much better. In the hospital he was cup fed my expressed Milk and some formula after a feed. They wanted me to continue this at home but really struggling with the cup feeding and then started using teets/bottles and then he started refusing the breast. So I’m really stuck. Don’t want him to start losing weight again. I’ve started now just breast feeding and expressing to get my levels up. We’re on day 7 today. The birth was really prolonged and ended in emergency csection - with no sleep for several days - my Adrenalin just feeling back to normal and was able to sleep this morning for 5 or so hours between feeds. Anyone else experience this? How did you make sure his weight gain continued when home?

We didn’t get as far as readmission but were close. Double pumping, including at night, and supplementing did the trick. It’s exhausting to get up and express at night but it really improved supply.

There's a section on Infant Feeding - you might be better posting your question there. Smile

I dont know from the baby point of view but you need to look after yourself - breast feeding vitamins, lots of water, lots of rich good food eg steak, porridge, cream, iron rich foods, make sure you rest when baby does.
Look at safe feeding positions lying down so that you can rest

I had this with my baby, she's 6 weeks now, her birthweight was 7lb 11iz, she looked like she was feeding at the breast, she wasn't, she lost 13lb and we got into a routine of feeding on the breast until she stopped swallowing, if it was less than 10mjns she got 60ml formula and more than 10 but less then 15 she got 30ml formula and over 15 we got told to leave it. This was done every 3 hours unless she wanted food before. I also double pumped better feeds at all hours for 20 minutes.

It was a long week but after the week she was just directly on the hood and she's now 11lb 4oz so we've got there.

Don't be hung up on the formula x

Yes, pump just after a feed and set a timer to wake up at night if baby sleeping longer than 2 hours. Milk production is highest in the early hours. It nearly killed me but for me breastfeeding was 5% nature and 95% sheer grit and determination.

I had a failed forceps delivery and emergency c section but was determined to BF because of the eczema and allergy risk factors in my family. I did it. Hardest thing I've ever done but I EBF for 9 months. First 3 weeks way more painful than the c section.

By the way DS still ended up with a peanut allergy!!

Not sure if this will help. Congratulations on your new baby.
Many many years ago when I gave birth to first child I had read all the books but baby hadn't. Short delivery and 9lb all well and good, next day he had breathing problems and feeding ones. I went home and baby was transferred to a neonatal unit in another town. The feeding was always an issue and he was tube fed for a few weeks.
On coming home baby was bottle fed and on the advice of another mum who had a baby in scbu wrote down daily all baby fed. Obviously that is not possible in this case. I would just feed often and as it has been said look after yourself, diet and rest. I was also told a good rule of thumb was plenty of wet nappies.
We later discovered baby had problems suckling. Tried everything including when it was older using a spoon .
I was advised to wean early which did seem to help.
Try not to get stressed out as they do tend straighten out.
Good wishes , my poor feeder who had me in tears about it is now a strapping adult .
