What is it about baby chub?

DS 2 drunk lots of milk and was a lovely chubby baby. I just enjoyed squeezing the rolls of chub around his thighs, and tickling him under his chins! His wrists were so fat he looked like a Michelin man. It was a delightful sensation to hold and cuddle a lovely fat/content baby.

I just love a chubby baby - I want to eat them all up! Or at the very least put piri-piri sauce on those lovely wobbly legs!!!!!!

Does anyone else feel like this? Why do chubby babies make you feel like you have to physically touch/grab the chub? Any ideas? There must be a reason for it.

I don’t like looking at fat babies with rolls of fat. When people show me photos of their fat babies and expect me to gush over them it just leads to a very uncomfortable silence.

I love a chubby baby! DD was deliciously chunky as a baby, with lovely squishy thighs.

Now at 9 years old she is extremely lean and even showing some muscle definition (she's very active) and it's hard to believe she's even the same child.

Her cheeks still have a little bit of soft squishiness but that's it

speakout · 19/09/2020 08:03

I don't like to see fat babies- sorry.

BuffaloCauliflower · 19/09/2020 08:06

I love a chubby baby and I get cute aggression all the time about other things/beings too. That urge to put them in my mouth and nom nom 😂 I think if you don’t get cute aggression you won’t get it.

BuffaloCauliflower · 19/09/2020 08:07

I also think there’s a pretty clear difference between a lovely chubby baby and an unhealthy baby.

ameliajoan · 19/09/2020 08:09

I think it’s weird too. I don’t like to see chubby babies; doesn’t look right 🤷‍♀️

If someone shows you a picture of their baby, why can't you just be polite and say, "Oh how cute?" Or compliment the eyes or something?
WellHighThereNeighbour · 19/09/2020 08:12

My first 3 were slim or average babies, and I totally didn't get the "chubby baby" love that people went on about. I was always like "meh, they're just like a baby, but fat"... mine were cute enough without the extra fat.

Then I had my 4th baby, who was such a chunky little butter ball... oh my goodness I suddenly understood! I still think my others were gorgeous babies, but I now get the chubby baby thing. I feel almost more protective of my big baby, as people ALWAYS comment on it, and I don't want that to be their defining feature, but I do love the little rolls and the round face grin that comes with chubbiness. I've definitely changed my position since having a big baby :) Though all of them are adorable in their own way.

Newmumatlast · 19/09/2020 08:12

I'm not a fan of overly chubby babies either tbh. I do not find them at all cute.

ThatSpiderDidntMissLegDay · 19/09/2020 08:12

DS was over 9lb when he was born and almost spherical at one point. Big chunky rolly thighs, massive arms with that crease where the wrist and arm meet, huge soft cheeks. He’s 6 now and very very slim, all the baby roundness has dropped off him in the last year (although his cheeks are still squishy).

DD was born a bit smaller and never reached the colossal size of her brother but in her baby pictures the difference is very noticeable in before and after she was mobile - she slimmed out much sooner.

Both babies were very hungry, although only for my milk - both were very, very slow to show interest in solid food which was frustrating at the time.

TheKeatingFive · 19/09/2020 08:13

Evolutionary wise it’s good for babies to have high fat reserves so I expect we’re hard-wired to respond well to it.

movingonup20 · 19/09/2020 08:22

No, it means they are overweight. I have had 2 kids, neither had excess fat and both are slim adults now (as in bmi circa 20)

PablosHoney · 19/09/2020 08:22

Praise their eyes like little currants in a bun 😂

CasuallyMasculine · 19/09/2020 08:25

No, fat babies don’t have that effect on me.

They remind me of sumo wrestlers.

MrsToothyBitch · 19/09/2020 08:30

I don't get it either, sorry.

My DM is the same and also has a thing about preferring babies to have hair (I was a small baby with a full head of hair).

dizzyness · 19/09/2020 08:33

I'm EXCATLY the same! I lovey babes chubby legs so much. I often joke I want to eat them lol.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 19/09/2020 08:34

I have never felt inclined to squeeze chubby babies. My ds wasn't chubby in the least, he had big long legs and beautiful long delicate fingers. Chubby babies do nothing for me 🤷🏻‍♀️

PablosHoney · 19/09/2020 08:35

Babies with a full head of hair look strange to me, but I certainly wouldn’t say that to their parent.

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 19/09/2020 08:37

I like chubby but there's a tipping point where they go into like...FAT and its not so cute. Just mildly chunky is perfect.

sapnupuas · 19/09/2020 08:39

My son had no chub. I felt robbed.

He's four and a half now and he's in 2-3 clothes. Not a single ounce of chub for pinching to be found.

CasuallyMasculine · 19/09/2020 08:42

Both my two were well over 10lb at birth and both had a full head of dark brown hair (which they still have as adults).

I was blow-drying DD’s hair when she was three months old Grin

PablosHoney · 19/09/2020 08:44

@CasuallyMasculine 😂😂

Soubriquet · 19/09/2020 09:08

Nothing like a good chonky baby

I love seeing them with all their rolls

Dd had rolls on rolls when she was a baby!
She’s now very slim. She burned it off quickly once she started getting active

Ds did have some rolls but he was never as chunky as dd was

What is it about baby chub?
BeardieWeirdie · 19/09/2020 09:13

#1 was 7lb at two weeks late so was shocked to have a giant 9lb #2. Both have followed the 9th centile line for weight. Hurrah for Mumsnet anonymity - I don’t like fat babies, I just think they will become fat kids and adults. You can still blow raspberries on a flat tummy!

PablosHoney · 19/09/2020 09:15

😍😍 @Soubriquet her little hands!
