Help finding dog owners from microchip

I rescued a dog from our neighbour very recently and have reason to suspect he might have stolen him. The dog was surrendered to me and I asked the vet to check for a chip and shockingly there was one.

I asked the vet to give me a rough idea of the name or area the chip is registered to but she just gave me the number. I've rung the database and they don't really care. They won't give me the address for gdpr reasons which is fine but I'd feel horrendous if he was stolen and I have no idea how to get the chip details! Can anyone recommend anything else?

The database will contact any registered owners.

Surrender the dog, or keep it, but don't look for drama or to play the hero.

I don't think she's being dramatic or being a hero, she's just trying to contact the rightful owner.

Phone the tracking company, ask them to contact the registered owner, request that it can be changed to your details and if they say no, then you might have to discuss the dogs future ownership

You'd be better off getting a vet or someone from a rescue to contact the chip database and see if the dog has been reported lost or stolen and asking them to contact the last reg. owner on the chip.

They cannot give details out to the public but may be able to give more information to a relevant professional.

The chip company sometimes has a dog marked up as stolen (or missing, not sure about that one) and people who have lost dogs are often encouraged to tell the microchip company. Can't you try another vet to check the chip as, quite often, vets will have access to the registered owner's details and will try to contact them. (They do on the Yorkshire Vet, anyway!). Or, you could post the dog up as "found" on www.doglost.co.uk (it is free) and the doughty DogLost volunteers, who spend valuable hours of their time doing such things, will go back over years and see if it matches any on DogLost still lost or stolen.

Hmm do you always approach life like this?

Nothing constructive just a put down .

And straight of the bat like that without knowing the background?

Is it exhausting?
