To not be happy about this??

I'm WFH in my living room at a desk in the corner of the room. I can see my front windows and door but it's quite hard to see me if looking through the window.

I've just been working away and noticed someone peering in my window and my front door. I looked and it's my landlord! They obviously didn't think I was in and was having a good look, or trying to, inside my house. They didn't see me.

The house is off the road, down a small path so you have to walk down to get to it rather than just passing on the pavement.

Aibu to think this is not appropriate? They've gone now.

I would have challenged this, asked if he was looking for you.

Icanflyhigh · 18/09/2020 12:44

Our landlady does this.
We have installed cameras now and gone to great pains to point the cameras out.
They should not be doing that - no right to visit without an appointment and at least 24 hours notice.
I'd phone them and call them out on it.

TheYeaSayer · 18/09/2020 12:46

Get in touch with him, ask him what the heck he was doing there, and tell him to make an appointment with you in future.

cakeandchampagne · 18/09/2020 12:47

Tell them you saw them peer in, but didn’t hear them knock.

You have to wonder how many times they’ve done this before and you were unaware.

steppemum · 18/09/2020 12:52

I would contact them, and say - I saw you looking through the window, can I help you?

See what they say. I wonder if he/she realised you were in and so didn't come in. Do they have Keys?

Sparklesocks · 18/09/2020 12:52

I agree you should contact them saying you think you saw them at your house earlier, but you hadn’t agreed for them to come over so weren’t sure why’d they be there?

Do they do things like this normally? M

I used to have a very nosey landlord who would drop by as she was ‘in the area’ (we lived in the same area so not exactly rare) and would say she knew we hadn’t arranged a meeting but thought she’d say hello and see how we and the house were. I think she was worried we would trash the place as we were students so wanted to check in, even though we passed every inspection with no issues. Nightmare.

Call him and ask why he was looking through your window.
Then install cameras (and don't mention it to him) to check how often he's doing it.

I wouldn't be happy about that at all. Total invasion of privacy.

CanIHelpYou · 18/09/2020 16:37

Yeah I'll have to mention it. I was just a bit wtf when it happened so I didn't say anything or go out which I probably should have done at the time!

It's like a PP said, it makes me wonder if they've done this before when I've been out! They clearly didn't think I was in. They didn't knock.

I'm going to send a text this evening. Should I say I'm not happy about it or should I just act like 'was there anything you needed?'.

OP posts:
steppemum · 19/09/2020 16:47

Did you send it?

I would have said - was there anything you needed? Why? Well, I think you might get a more honest answer, which is to your advantage.
But whatever he/she says, I would then follow it up with a quite formal comment, using the law something like - I had assumed that there must be a problem, as the law says that we are entitled to enjoy the property in peace and the law says that you need to arrange a time with us if you want to call round. As I am sure you are aware, we are good tenants, but I am very uncomfortable with the idea that I could look up from my sofa and see you looking through the window. In future please contact us in advance if you need to visit.

I am still wondering if they have keys and if they have visited in your absence, and I would consider getting a ring doorbell
