Reading thread about op's age guessing game... and it made me wonder- why do we use the french term 'petite' for short women.. but only ever really use the English word tall for- well, tall women.
What's wrong with the word 'short ' ??? When did short become taboo???Hmm

To me 'petite' doesn't mean just short.

It means short and small framed.

I know lots of short women. Some are short and slim, some are short and fat but only a few of them are petite.

Ohhh..ok. So what's the right word for someone who's short and fat? Always thought petite just meant short in height...

Not in clothing stores it isn’t. You can still buy a size 18 in a petite range.
AnneLovesGilbert · 17/09/2020 23:03

Some clothes brands have a petite range which is for women under 5’3. So that might be you think that. But I agree that it’s a descriptor of frame and not purely height in usual conversation.
