male teachers distracted by school skorts

i have read similar stuff on here but am gobsmacked that this has happened at my dd's school today. Dd goes to a fee paying girls only school, they have a strict uniform policy which i am happy with. On pe days, because of covid the girls have been told to wear their sports uniforms as changing rooms have been closed, so they are wearing their tracksuits, and the badmington and hockey teams have been wearing their skorts on training days. This morning one of the girls was stopped at the door and told that her skort was too short. It is a compulsary uniform for the hockey team, and they only come in one length. This girl is particularly curvy which is presumably why she was singled out. A couple of hours later, she was called out of class and told that her skort was distracting to the male teachers and she wasn't to wear it again. Then an announcement was made to the pupils that the skort was no longer to be worn in school or at training, but might possibly be worn at matches. This seems utterly ridiculous to me, that an item of uniform chosen by the school has been deemed inappropriate. I can't believe too that the principal was stupid enough to tell the girl that she would distract the male teachers. Surely ianbu?

The male teacher thing is ridiculous! I wonder if they meant it made them uncomfortable rather than distracted as surely they shouldn’t be distracted by minors or anyone for that matter as they have some self-control.
I wonder if the girls skort (although one length) was inappropriately tight if she was curly? Maybe she needed to size up x

MsEllany · 18/09/2020 13:32

@FlyingByTheSeatof

I dont think any fuss is needed OP.

The girls should wear their PE clothes during PE only and that's that, why make a big deal about it all. So what if it was worded badly.

I mean, you could have read the entire OP where is says On pe days, because of covid the girls have been told to wear their sports uniforms as changing rooms have been closed

YANBU OP.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 18/09/2020 13:38

I could totally see a teacher making this comment! Doesn't mean it's a fact that male teachers would be distracted, that's just their excuse. But I'd still bring it up with the head regardless

MulticolourMophead · 18/09/2020 13:44

@FlyingByTheSeatof

I will end by saying I also have a teenage DS at the same School so am also able to 'focus on the real issue - male behaviour' in your words OP. He is gentleman when it comes to these things but they are not always fully in control of all body parts, lets say.
It's still not the responsibility of girls/women to modify their behviour or clothing because of your DS's reaction. It's his reaction and he needs to deal with it.

We all need to stop victim blaming, ie stop blaming women/girls and their choice in clothing.

Brefugee · 18/09/2020 13:46

the girls themselves need to get control of this and kick up the stink.
The school needs to get with the 21st century and have pe kit that is practical.

And if the male teachers (and presumably the lesbian and bi female teachers?) can't stop gawping they should fuck off and find a new job.

DressesWithPocketsRockMyWorld · 18/09/2020 13:50

I would go off my NUT at this victim blaming, seeing misogyny. Seriously. Off. My. Nut.

squeekyclean · 18/09/2020 13:50

If I had a daughter at your child's school I would be asking them to reconsider their team sports kit. Not because it is 'distracting' but because some girls may feel uncomfortable in something so short and it may well make it more likely that they get inappropriate comments from arsehole men on the way to school (the fault is with the men, but it's the girls who would feel uncomfortable).

As for distracting male teachers- my DH is a teacher and we also have a teenage daughter so he spends a lot of time around teenage girls. He tells me that he has never once been distracted by their clothing! If the school is really concerned that they have a male teacher who finds this distracting the safeguarding lead should be looking in to it!

HostessTrolley · 18/09/2020 13:50

My d just started her second year at university but prior to this was in the mixed sixth form of a boys grammar school. The girls tended to push the dress code and wear short skirts with opaque tights and jackets. A female careers teacher pulled a girl over and told her to sort her skirt out as it was too short and ‘theres no wonder girls get raped and bad things happen’. Definitely happened, friend of my daughter.

Whatruthinking · 18/09/2020 14:00

More worried about the teachers reaction. I’d be furious op.

dottiedodah · 18/09/2020 14:07

Well this is clearly out of order! What kind of Male Teachers do they have working for them FFS! I would complain for certain !

LakieLady · 18/09/2020 14:19

This was due to a comment a member of public made about it being too short

Wtf? What kind of idiot thinks they have the right to judge what total strangers are wearing and report it to the one organisation that can change it?

Ffs, why do so many people want to control what women and girls wear.

LakieLady · 18/09/2020 14:35

How about we focus on The real issue - male behaviour- rather than making women and girls responsible for how men and boys behave

This. Fifty years after bra-burning, women are still being told what to wear, for fear of exciting the menz.

It's fucking ridiculous.

Kolsch · 18/09/2020 14:52

So basically, females are now being told that they can't dress in what is traditionally female clothing, however long or short that garment, or even what that garment is.
For no other reason than some men find it hard to control themselves.
The fact that my attire is being questioned would get my blood pressure up, being told by a man what I can and can't wear would have it positively exploding from my ears.
A females shape and size has nothing to do with it.
If some men can't deal with women's attire then they have a huge problem. They're probably from the school of thought that a woman is ' asking for it ' due to her attire.
They have no place in a decent society, let alone in a school.
I think the word I'm looking for here is perverts.
Why not just drape women in shapeless old sacks and be done with it!
Even if the ops post is nonsense, it feels good to get that off my chest.

flippertygibblet · 18/09/2020 14:55

My daughter was told the exact same phrase in relation to her school skirt 'Distracting to the male teachers' I was Shock I really do feel if these male teachers are so distracted by pupils in skirts they need to rethink their career choice! Having said that, it was actually a female teacher who told my daughter that, & I'm sure many male teachers would be offended that their colleague was saying this!

Pieceofpurplesky · 18/09/2020 15:18

Nobody should be told what to wear but some kids at school (I'm a teacher) forget how short their skirts are. It's not that male staff are distracted sexually but some girls leave little covered - many an eyeful under a desk when a girl sits cross legged, or scissor kicks in drama etc.

As a woman I can have a word with a girl and explain that she is flashing the whole room and nobody thinks anything of it. A male teacher says exactly the same and he is still branded a 'nonce' ten years later.

Whilst I don't agree with telling a girl how to dress there is a level of appropriateness - none of you will be flashing your vulvas at work after all!

Not sticking up for perverted men - just decent ones!

bimblingonagain · 18/09/2020 15:19

Its time to take a stand against this awful attitude. If my daughter is told BS like this she woudl be the first to say that is their issue not mine. Girls are being taught to behave how men want them to?!?!?! Just no.

Pieceofpurplesky · 18/09/2020 15:20

I know this isn't an issue in skorts by the way!

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 18/09/2020 15:23

Just ask Why are the male teachers distracted by the legs of the children they teach? Are knowingly you hiring paedophiles? Its a skort it isn't like you can see their knickers. Are they seriously admitting to being attracted to 15/16 year old girls to the extent that they cannot be trusted unless the girls cover up? What the hell kind of school are they running?

OverTheRainbow88 · 18/09/2020 15:32

Tbf, it is quite uncomfortable walking up stairs behind any sex kid and seeing their underwear/pants regardless of being a paedo or not.

If the school selected uniform results in vulvas on show then your school needs to rethink its uniform supplier.
GuyFawkesDay · 18/09/2020 16:13

Often it's not distracting as such however

If a male teacher pulls a girl up on uniform, he can leave himself open to "are you looking at my legs" accusations.

It's a minefield, as clearly yes, he had had to notice the uniform issue, but there's nothing sinister in doing his job but can be left absolutely at the mercy of accusations.

No teacher should say it's distracting boys etc though. That's wrong and unacceptable.

Pieceofpurplesky · 18/09/2020 16:22

Vet whatever happens and whatever the uniform girls will roll them up!

Fudgewhizz · 18/09/2020 16:24

This happened at my friend's school too last week. It's outrageous! I'd be fuming.

Fudgewhizz · 18/09/2020 16:24

Sorry, friend's daughter's school!
