Neighbour had a big smokey plastics fire in the garden

Neighbour 2 doors up had a huge smokey fire in the garden this afternoon, I don't know what they were burning but it stunk of plastic and huge clouds of black smoked was billowing into my garden

It's been a lovely day here so I had all the windows and the back door open plus washing on the line. Said neighbour didn't tell me he was going to have a fire and by the time I realised my house was full of smoke and the clothes on the washing line smelt so bad of smoke that I've had to wash them all again.

I was fuming so I walked round and asked him (nicely) to tell his neighbours next time. DH and DD both said I should have just left it as this is a new neighbour 🙄. So what do you think WIBU?

Our council has told us not to have bonfires during the pandemic.

YWNBU. What did he say?

NancyNightmare · 17/09/2020 19:37

YWNBU! That sounds rancid!

I expect he didn't know quite how much it would stink when he lit it. Hopefully he has got the message now.

We had a neighbour who once burnt her husband’s colostomy bags 🤢 - also on a lovely warm day when my then toddler was playing in the garden. She said she couldn’t put them in household waste. We found and printed off the medical waste collection leaflet from the council website and said we would report her if she did it again.

he was quite apologetic but the fires still billowing out putrid smoke now and I can't open my windows.

I was fuming about my washing, I had 2 loads on the line and I had to wash it all again.

That's a good point about the council banning bonfires, I'm sure our council did too now I think about it.

Not unreasonable at all. It's anti-social and a risk to health and property and a waste of resources. One of one neighbours a few doors down is known for burning goodness knows what. Unfortunately one of their fires got out of control recently and the Fire Service had to attend. They'd gone out leaving the fire unattended so were completely unawares. They lost their shed and a number of fences panels on one side after a gas canister exploded. It could've been worse were it not for quick thinking neighbours. Interestingly they stopped since this incident.

Our council has banned bonfires too, partly due to covid and also because they charge for disposing of garden waste. I reported a neighbour who had a bonfire at the start of lockdown because last summer he burned stuff in his garden every bloody weekend.

The council sent someone round right away and they had a word. No fires since.

Stop it. I've been watching Des all week.

Oh god yes, I really hope the smell and the huge clouds of smoke were tyres or something and not remains. Funny enough the previous neighbour did a moonlight flit, there one day gone the next and then the new guy moved in urghhh
