Hi.
I know this probably isn't the right thread to post in, but wanted the traffic. I'm just hoping to get some advice, has similar happened to someone else, what was the outcome.
My 3 year old went back to nursery and within 3 days came out with a cold/temperature, her temperature spiked last Friday at 41 and she was sick, we contacted 111 and they got us an OOH appointment because of her symptoms. They gave her a good check over, didn't seem overly concerned but told us to get a covid test and self isolate which we managed to do Monday.
Her temperature has been very up and down ever since, it's been up everyday, but it's been very erratic. The past couple of days it is fading, it's been ok all day today but spiked again tonight, It seems to be tied in to when she's tired, is that even a thing?! She seems absolute fine in herself, maybe a bit wiped out when it does spike but generally looking at her you wouldn't know. I did call the doctors back and just get the generic 'it's viral' and keep up with calpol and fluids, and wait for the test results... meanwhile I have a little lady who's temperature keeps randomly spiking. Has anyone else had a LO whose temperature done similar things, I can be quite a worrier when they are poorly at the best of times

It is very normal for fevers to wax and wane, and very common for them to spike early evening in particular. If she is drinking plenty and seems well enough I herself I wouldn't be too worried personally (easy to say as mine are now older, I would have worried with my first).

Thank you! I think I'm just worried with it going on now for almost a week, although not as often and not as high, so that is a relief at least, she's drinking and weeing well, do no dehydration.

Temperatures fluctuate daily anyway so this isn't uncommon and you are taking more than normal and noticing it more.

My sons normal temperature fluctuates wildly. His spikes up with anger, excitement, during a meltdown (autism).

Also, when my children have had fevers it's really high for a day or two then it's up and down for a few days so probably normal.

Just wait for the test results. I'm sure he'll be fine in a day or two

Ds2 had flu aged 4 and lay on the sofa with a fever for 10 days. And yes it seemed like an eternity but they bounce back like little rubber balls.

DisappearingGirl · 17/09/2020 18:48

It probably isn't this, but the one thing both my DDs had that meant their temperatures kept spiking over and over again was scarlet fever. It's not generally serious but it's bacterial not viral so requires antibiotics. However it generally has a fairly dramatic rash (you can google it), so you'd probably know if it was that!

That's a good point, I wouldn't usually be there multiple times a day armed with the thermometer, and as she generally seems fine in herself had she not had the massive spike the other day we wouldn't really think any different apart from maybe she's a bit tired. Thank you for putting it into perspective

Oh no, I have heard of a few children round here that have been taken out with this lately, luckily she has no rash (my eldest daughter had meningitis as a baby so I'm very on it when looking for rashes) but will definitely keep a close eye!

Did they send a urine sample or throat swab for Strep? Sometimes helpful if illness persists as little ones can present quite vague signs or symptoms. If not improving by day 5-7 maybe worth seeking further advice.
Hope she is on the mend soon.

No they didn't, they just listened to her chest l, did her temperature and looked at her throat before telling us to self isolate and get a test, and just keep up with her fluids and calpol. Tomorrow will be a week, I did try and call them today but because her temperature didn't spike until quite late by the time I called all appointments had gone. Thank you, it is horrible when they're not well

I think @Mumof1I gave very good advice. A temperature going on for over a week would be worth maybe another visit to the GP.

Sockmonster23 · 17/09/2020 19:48

Yes it seems normal , the calpol just masks the fever for a it brings it down, it rises again and will go down and rise until the virus has run its course and it does.

My daughter once had a temperature spike of 40 too ! No other symptoms just fever up and down and doc wasn’t a bit worried and said it would run it’s course and sent us home, this was pretty COVID. My other son had fever for 6 days last year chest infection and it was around early November m! Took to out of hours twice. I do wonder if it was corona then as I came down with A fever as well and a cough and I’m never that sick but we both bounced back Fine after a week and a bit maybe.

I think this winter will be hectic lol confusing and probably worrying for many. Even flu vaccine or nasal spray doesn’t ward off all viruses and flu that goes one.

Sockmonster23 · 17/09/2020 19:50

Of course if fever is still going after 7 days get it check but I was told it can go on for about 10 days once and it’s very rare it’s anything more sinister. I do hope she gets better soon!

Feelingconfused2020 · 17/09/2020 19:52

It's most likely nothing but a minor virus that will pass but I would say contact GP again tomorrow. If she spikes overnight contact out of hours. In my experience they're great anyway and could prescribe her antibiotics if needed.

3 year olds can't describe their symptoms properly so you want them to check for every possible thing.

Lostinagoodbook · 17/09/2020 21:00

My 1 year old had an overnight fever of 40 a week ago then was fine, had negative corona test then got ill again a week later after not leaving the house......(test took ages to come back). Temp between 39 and 41, turns out both tonsils are badly infected :-(. They think he had it all along. Antibiotics now. I would contact again after a week if it's persisting? Xx

mummyofthreemunchkins · 17/09/2020 21:14

Thank you everyone for great advice and reassuring words, she's tucked up in bed now fast asleep so fingers crossed for an uneventful night! The good news is we had our negative results through this evening so that's some good news and something to cross off the list! I'll be calling the doctors back in the morning and explaining to them the pattern of her fever and that it seems to spike late afternoon and into the evening and see what they say! I've had a look in her throat and doesn't look red, inflamed or white and gunky so I'm hoping not tonsillitis, and if you ask her if she's hurting anywhere she says no, so hopefully it's just some weird virus thing that's been picked up at nursery that will run its course.

My youngest DD (6) gets a raging temp. at the drop of a hat. Her older sisters would occasionally get high temps when they were ill but this DC seems to burn up alarmingly with the slightest of snivels.

She soars straight up to 101/104 with red tinged whites of the eyes and everything. It always ends up calming down after a few days but we always worry. Always end up calling doc. Always sit by her watching the temp and checking when the next calpol is due!

We're a bit more used to it now and used to the routine of keeping her cool and calpoling and keeping fluids up and checking for a rash and neck ache and aversion to bright light ect ect. but it always just goes away on it's own as she feels better.

3 is a tricky age. It gets easier as they get older as they can tell you properly how they feel and you can explain about meds ect.

Anyway - just sympathising :)
(I'm just waiting for DDs first mad high temp after just going back to school ... )
