Lewis Hamilton and anti racism

Changemyname901 · 17/09/2020 09:34

I don’t really understand Hamilton’s anti-racism stance. He is loudly campaigning against Black racism and that’s great, no complaints at all, good for him. But then he spends his free time hanging out with Philip Green, enjoying the spoils of Greens wealth, hanging out on his yacht, wearing his clothes. All of which Green has got from using slave labourers in places like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. He is well known for exploiting people in such countries from young ages.

This makes no sense to me? How can you talk about slavery, as Hamilton has, but then enjoy the spoils of and be good friends with a man who uses slave labour to create his clothes and his empire? I feel like it’s selective. If you’re fighting racism, shouldn’t you be anti all aspects? I’m not saying he should be campaigning about other aspects of racism or modern slavery, if his passion is Black racism then that’s not a problem, he doesn’t have to shout about all other issues in the world, but I feel very cross that he can overlook Greens behaviour and physically benefit from it when he is such an advocate of anti-racism? Green has also been accused of racism and a black worker reported that he said something which I won’t repeat. How can Hamilton overlook all this? Am I being unreasonable to think this? It’s pit me off him to be honest, and I have zero desire to listen to him because I feel like it’s so hypocritical?

Before anyone questions me, I try very hard to shop ethically for food (and clothes when I bother to buy them), so I feel as though I can comment. I wouldn’t support someone like Topshop. Hamilton May also shop ethically, but to hang out on holiday on his yacht and enjoy his wealth just seems such bullshit to me?

“Expatiate”

Changemyname901 · 17/09/2020 15:35

@MrsTerryPratchett

Part of my issue with all this is that some people pretend to not like BLM because of rioting, violent protests and damage to property. "Protest peacefully" they say. Then someone does a dance on TV and someone wears a t-shirt and there are complaints. Massive amounts of complaints.

It does tend to look like it's neither the hypocrisy nor the form of the protest. It's the cause that people object to.

Except I have spoken out publicly for BLM, supported Diversity’s dance, I friended those who have shown signs of racism, donated to BLM etc. So it’s not his cause at all, as I have said over and over I support his cause, I support his platform. I don’t care about his money, I don’t care if he wins F1. It’s his hypocrisy I am asking about.

@babasaclover

I'm with you OP. the guy is an absolute twat. It's a case of do as I say not as I do. Just like Harry and Meghan telling ua to save the planet and cut carbon footprint whilst travelling around on private jets!
And another example. Emma Thompson.
skippy67 · 17/09/2020 15:44

Did you post a little black square on your social media a while back too OP?

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/09/2020 15:45

I don't see that as the same. The Royals jetting around is creating the issue. It's actually releasing CO2. His being mates with someone doesn't actually enslave anyone. I wouldn't hang out with the arse but it's not the same. It's like the Royals banging on about the climate and then hanging out with Branson.

I don't know if LH wears clothes made in sweat shops. Maybe he doesn't.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 17/09/2020 15:47

I've never been a fan of Hamilton the racing driver, as I think he's arrogant, infantile when things are not going his way, and habitually throws his team under the bus and will not accept responsibility for his own mistakes. There's no doubting his talent, but that alone doesn't compel anyone to admire or even like him. The gripes about him winning constantly were no different to those when Shumi was dominating at his peak. It diminishes the entire spectacle and inevitably results in reduced interest.

As for Hamilton the human being, I think he's well intentioned, which is to his credit, but I also think he's not quite bright enough to realise when he's being a ridiculous hypocrite. I'm sorry, but it's utterly tone deaf to take millions of Euros from one of the largest automotive companies on the planet, participate in a sport with an enormous carbon footprint, and live a jetsetting lifestyle away from the track, then turn around an lecture about environmental issues.

SharonasCorona · 17/09/2020 15:47
@Inpensity I also called out Lena Dunham for wearing/posing in clothes made in the same situations when she is an advocate for women’s rights. So no, nothing to do with him being Black at all. It’s not about his race or religion or anything else, it’s about what he stands for. If Ricky Gervais put a fur hat on I would hold him to the same account.
Ah yes the hasty inclusion of a young woman to deflect from picking on two brown men.

Aridane · 17/09/2020 15:48

Seems to be a trend of starting g bashing threads about young black men with a social or political conscience - eg the Marcus Rashford thread (why doesn’t he give his money to charity)

Funny how the OP doesn’t have an issue with Bernie Ecclestone being friends with Green!

Philip Green, Hamilton, Jenson Button etc all live in a tiny principality of Monaco. Much as I abhor all that wealth and what it stands for, even I can see see that like identifies with like and they will hang out as ‘ex-pats’.

Changemyname901 · 17/09/2020 15:53

@Aridane what Marcus Rashford has done is wonderful. There are lots of footballers who do amazing social work and it doesn’t get shouted about enough.

@skippy67 no I didn’t. Why is that relevant, sorry?

People are looking for racism where it just doesn’t exist. I have asked for the thread to be deleted as clearly it is upsetting some people and that was not my intention.

That was a disgrace and op there obviously did it for shit and giggles to rile people up. They didn't even spell the name right!

He lives in a tax haven and then complains about his home town being a dump.

Then there was is this:

In 2016, one Lewis Hamilton notoriously voiced his appreciation for his hosts at the Bahrain Grand Prix, arriving in a “thobe”, the traditional dress of the Bahraini royal family, and tweeting: “Nothing but love and respect for this culture, and Bahrain!! Feeling royal.” In Bahrain, 1.9 people in every thousand is thought to be a slave. The royal family has been repeatedly accused of abusing slaves.

Hopefully Lewis is rethinking some of his friendships.

Taylor swift and Lena denham have (rightly) got a lot of shit for there feminism being rich white woman centric. Lewis Hamilton’s stance on racism seems very similar. I hope that his activism in one area will open his eyes to his privilege in other areas.

Changemyname901 · 17/09/2020 15:56

@SharonasCorona No because Bernie Ecclestone has made racist comments and has a past of very suspicious issues. I have no idea who he hangs out with because I have never respected him before like I have Hamilton? Stop reaching. You’ve called me racist, oh and sexist too. Well done.

OP posts:
Notverybright · 17/09/2020 15:56

I have a problem with any multi millionaire who lives on a tax haven btw.

lynsey91 · 17/09/2020 15:56

@Proudboomer so are you ok with sports people moving out of the UK?

I don't have a problem with F1 drivers or any other motor sport drivers as it is just about the only sport I am passionate about and so is DH. I have followed F1 for about 50 years being a big fan Nigel Mansell, James Hunt, Ayrton Senna and many more.

I am a massive fan of Lewis and think he is one of, if not the, best driver ever. I am finding the races a bit boring (although a couple lately have been anything but) and would love to see Lewis have some real competition but even his team mate is not in the same league.

I guess because I support him in a lot of ways I am happy to see him keep winning and will be over the moon if he wins the championship again this year as he most likely will.

Schumacher I found boring plus he was a dirty driver. something that Lewis can never be accused of.

I get that not everyone likes him. I get that some think he is arrogant although I think he is just very confident but then if I were the best F1 driver I might be a bit arrogant too. No need though for all the nasty comments on here and the name calling.

Lewis has loyal fans and he definitely appreciates them but he also gets far far more hatred that any other driver and just about always has. I can't help but think that is due to his colour. I belong to a few F1 facebook groups and some horrible things are said about him but rarely about other drivers.

derxa · 17/09/2020 15:56

He's the UK's top formula one driver. That's it. He's never been popular and making BLM protests won't help that. Andy Murray was very unpopular and he's white. 'Popularity' usually means favoured by the English sports press and the BBC. So we have golden girls Jessica Ennis Hill and Denise Lewis. They are loved because they are completely anodyne.
I like LH because he's a talented sportsman.
I don't care if he hangs out with Philip Green.

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 17/09/2020 15:59

It’s called hypocrisy. He is certainly not on his own though. Maybe in a couple of hundred years people will pull down any plaques/statues related to him and other supporters of 21st century slavery.

But just as 2-3 hundred years ago you could spend all day going to church and praying to the Christian God yet still think it’s ok to support contemporary slavery, today it seems perfectly ok to abide by the commandments of Instagram and worship the Gods of fame and fortune and support Contemporary slavery.

History is a wonderful spiral where we keep being given the chance to do the right thing, it’s not an evolutionary arrow where we have learned a lesson from our past never to be repeated.

Home2018 · 17/09/2020 15:59

So who in history has protested for something and created massive awareness or change, yet been perfect in all areas of thier lives?

What's the idea, he shouldn't protest about BLM unless he protests about everything else? I guess that kind of excludes all rich and influential black people who's voices bring so much power and attention to the NECESSARY cause.

Is it possible that he's protesting against BLM because be knows and understand it because of his lived experience?

Even in representing his country and being the best they've ever had, he still gets held under a harsher spotlight, just like ALL OTHER BLACK SPORTSMEN/WOMEN at the top of their games do. And not because of racism. Of course 🙄

SharonasCorona · 17/09/2020 15:59

Does the thread need to be deleted? Everyone has had their say?

lynsey91 · 17/09/2020 16:01

@Notverybright so if you could live somewhere like Monaco you would refuse?

I certainly wouldn't. As I said, good weather, low crime. The weather in the UK is shit and the crime is high and getting higher. Good luck to anyone rich enough to be able to live in Monaco

Home2018 · 17/09/2020 16:01

Lol.

If he was protesting against anti semitism, Islamophobia or sexism, would you say he shouldn't because he's mates with a tax dodger?

Ridiculous.

Changemyname901 · 17/09/2020 16:01

@Home2018 please read the original OP, I literally said the opposite of what you are accusing me. I said I support him and I said I don’t expect him to campaign for any other issue whatsoever.

OP posts:

This kind of thread makes me extraordinary uncomfortable. Unless OP is popping up to take down every mumsnet poster that asks for advice on buying a new high street top, I literally do not have the slightest idea why Lewis Hamilton is being singled out. Fingers crossed she is a super, super ethical consumer that does not consume a single product from a morally dubious manufacturing chain or cavort with anyone that is anything less than perfect. If that isn't the case then it does seem she is merely complaining about someone that cares about racism...

Changemyname901 · 17/09/2020 16:02

Also @Home2018 nothing to do with tax dodging, but about his friend who is racist and indulges in Slave labour. Not the same.
