To say they should just take the redundancy?

Sister has worked for a company for 15 years on a 20 hour contract. Got told yesterday that they can offer only 6 hours going forward. If she accepts, her redundancy rate in the future will go down hugely won't it? I kind of feel she is better off accepting the redundancy money. Would you agree?

This is all complicated and she is best to take proper, legally checked advice as the law is complicated and changes. Try phoning her local Citizens Adice or tell her to try to get through to their on-line chat on their website.

Firstly: Is the redundancy fair? Why has she been selected?

Assuming it is fair, she needs to get the redundancy calculation from her employer. An element will be tax-free (the statutory element) which may make a difference to her decision. She can reqiest that without agreeing to it.

Here is the calculator:

www.citizensadvice.org.uk/work/leaving-a-job/redundancy/redundancy-pay/

She could agree to a temporary reduction in working hours and protect her redundancy calculation. I do not know the current rules about tur ing down reduced hours and the impact on on being able to claim UC.

Its complicated. Get advice.

Good luck!!!

I am pretty sure it wouldn't be a temporary change in hours. Not for a long while anyway.
The selection of redundancy was fair.
I guess now, I would say she should look into if she does decide to stay, will her redundancy package be affected a few months down the line if the new role does not fold....
