To have mixed feelings with work because I'm not eligible for other internal roles?

Our company went from small to medium size over the past ten months. We didn't use to have HR and now we do. (One of th reasons why we have her is to make things more transparent).

My boss/CEO has always said that I will change to a different role once I came back from ML. Our customer base increased exponentially during the pandemic so I need to stay in my current role until things calm down.

Then yesterday a new internal rola has been posted but I'm not "eligible" because they have plans for me.

So on one hand it's great that at least it's official with HR but on the other hand god only knows when it will happen.

Sounds like they're stringing you along. If you like the sound of the new role surely they can't stop you from applying?!

Fressia123 · 16/09/2020 17:19

It could be that way but at the same time said role can only be done by me (or they'd have to hire someone externally), so I tend to believe them but I wish he'd put a date to it.

It depends on who they are. If it is the people who will be leading you then it’s a strong hint you won’t get it and they might have someone in mind. If it is your current manager then ignore it or get a commitment to a better offer.

It's been the company owner who's always promised this new role. But I know that other people who were already doing different jobs had to be moved back to help with the backlog.

My company advertised a job internally last year and it was designed for one employee and one employee only

In the requirements they specified that you need to have a welding certificate but the job is quality control. No welding required. The person that did the job previously didn't have a welding certificate

It's a shame because I could have done the job but don't have the certificate. Only two people out of the seventy do and the other person wouldn't have applied for the job because it would have meant a large pay cut

Dozer · 17/09/2020 07:02

Is it advertised internally? If so they can’t prevent you from applying. Potentially direct sex discrimination!

Llamapolice · 17/09/2020 07:07

I'm in almost exactly the same situation with my employer and I'm applying for other jobs. If and when I have an offer (waiting for an interview date for one so fingers crossed) I'm going to basically tell my current employer that I'd rather not leave but I don't feel opportunities are forthcoming quickly enough with them. I'm hoping that will prompt them to get their act together and offer me the promotion they've been talking about but if not I am prepared to actually leave.

Don't put up with this, it undervalues you and you will end up resentful if you're anything like me.

Fressia123 · 17/09/2020 07:12

Yes, it was advertised internally and all enquiries are through HR. I don't think I'm being discriminated but at least HR is now aware of the situation so I can apply pressure that way

@Llamapolice I'm actively looking for other jobs ALL THE TIME (in fact I got an offer from Amazon but I had to relocate).

I'd rather stay with my current company, it's "cool" and it's local but it was a gigantic mess and it's gradually being organised more professionally.

They have told you, a maternity returner, not to apply. V poor management practice, at best!

Apply.

Fressia123 · 17/09/2020 11:00

Well I doubt HR lady will even let me apply given the CEO himself has said I'm already "taken" but I can't move to my new role because we still have backlog. I'm not the only one in this situation though.

altiara · 17/09/2020 11:06

Can you apply for it anyway?

altiara · 17/09/2020 11:09

Sorry, took so long to post I didn’t see your update.
Could you say, you appreciate the upcoming opportunity, however you would like to have an idea on timelines and salary. (Meaning you can’t hang around forever, you want to have career progression and lots of money)

Fressia123 · 17/09/2020 11:16

He's already given me a decent payrise (7%) but I agree with you a broad timeline would be nice.

To add insult to injury HR posted on the online noticeboard that we should apply even of we don't think we have what it takes as that my open doors in the future... But yet I have to wait for this role designed for me to appear from thin air.
