To explain to you why your bold has failed?

I've seen a few threads recently where a poster has tried to quote part of a thread by making it bold type, and has remarked that it has failed. This confused me for a while too!

Basically, if the bit you are quoting has more than one paragraph, you need to put an asterisk at the start and end of EACH PARAGRAPH, rather than just at the start and end of the entire section.

I'm viewing your post on an iPad and that here is struck out.

I've seen this happening quite a lot over the last few days. Tends to be when there is an influx of new posters who are unfamiliar with how to quote properly.

It’s a setting. iPads and iPhones automatically turn two dashed into a large dash. You have to manually turn it off. Alternatively, just click the “I” next to the smiley face icons below the text box and literally just select strikethrough or any other amendment and it will put it in automatically for you

The trouble with those style buttons if you then edit your message before posting that can end up mangling it too.

I know how to bold. Strike through currently works on my phone.

But my God, misuse of the Quote function is driving me to the most murderous feelings.

Why, by all that's holy, do some people think they must carry on a whole thread's worth of conversation by quoting, in full, the post of the final poster above them? (And even if another post appears while you're writing yours, it's still perfectly possible to respond without doing this.)

Poster A: 10 paragraphs of whatever.
Poster B: Quotes entire 10 paragraphs to bring attention to 5 words somewhere in the middle. Or, even worse, quotes 10 paragraphs just to respond vaguely to the gist of the quoted post.

I've read threads where the thread starter fully quotes Every Single Post. There are no words to express how staggeringly, painfully, stupidly enraging this is.

Agree that some of the quoting is painful. Especially when the poster quotes the OP in full. Even worse when it is only the second post.

It is sometimes useful to quote a pp as the thread may have moved on and it is not clear what you are responding to, but surely everyone has at least read some of the opening post so there is nothing to be gained by quoting it - especially if it is half a page of rambling text

Indeed. People seem to have lost the simple, satisfying art of copying and pasting the relevant phrase. The Quote thing is so clumsy, anyway - stuck at the top of a post, like it or not. Far more wieldy to pick and choose bits and pieces from one or more posts, c&p them individually, and weave them into one's argument.

I think the PP thought you meant you were using the iPad app (Which is what I use mostly) - it's a T next to the smiley face by default to get text styles, I if you're in italic mode.

I thought you were not being unreasonable to point it out...

Just trying strikethrough oh wow I've always wanted to know how to do this.
